Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly said that he is at loss for words on watching the India/England game. He triggered two major reasons for the loss of India to England yesterday in ICC World Cup 2019. He explained the loss in two reasons – the first 10 overs of their chase when Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma struggled to score quickly and the last 5 overs when Dhoni and Jadhav scored at a run-a-ball despite the asking rate being well over 13 runs per over.
Sourav seemed very disappointed while talking about the game. It is the first defeat of India in the ICC World Cup 2019 at Birmingham, Edgbaston on Sunday. India lost to England in just 31 runs. Ganguly, who was sitting in the commentary box and watching the match felt India to improve a lot in various areas in order to survive in the tournament further
Coming to the match, opener Jonny Bairstow’s did 111 off 109 balls and set the target high while cavalier 54-ball 79 by all-rounder Ben Stokes took England to a huge number 337 for 7 in 50 overs after batting first. Though the score seemed ok to reach in the start, it later got a headache for the Indian players.
Ganguly disappointed due to Dhoni’s slow take
Rohit Sharma did 102 and skipper Virat Kohli did 66 and slowly took India to 306 for 5. Talking about India’s unexpected loss, Ganguly said, ‘India lost the match in two stages – the first 10 overs of their chase when Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma struggled to score quickly and the last 5 overs when Dhoni and Jadhav scored at a run-a-ball despite the asking rate being well over 13 runs per over.“
He said,“You cannot score just 28 runs in the first Powerplay when you are chasing a total like 338. Kohli and Rohit should have taken more risks at the top.” Ganguly also pointed fingers and Dhoni and Jadhav’s approach towards the end of the chase. “It was hard to explain the approach of Dhoni and Jadhav, they were scoring at a run-a-ball when sixes and fours were needed,” Ganguly said.
