Indian Former Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj just passed away at the age of 67, after suffering a massive heart attack at AIIMs in New Delhi. Her untime demise will be creating a great void in the Indian politics that cannot be filled in the near future.
Let us have a look at some of her achievements and career growth that she has attained in her illustrious political career.
1) Early career in politics
Started with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad in the 1970s, she turned out to be an integral part of George Fernandes’s legal defense team during 1975.
2) Politics in the State-level
Sushma Swaraj became a member of the Legislative Assembly of Haryana from 1977 to 1982 from Ambala Cantonment assembly seat at the age of 25. She again won from the same place in 1987. She was sworn in as the Cabinet Minister of the Janata Party Government headed by Devi Lal and also became the state president of the Janata Party in Haryana in 1979, when she was only 27 years of age.
3) Chief Minister of Delhi
In 1998, she became the first female chief minister of Delhi.
4) National-level politics
Elected as the member of Rajya Sabha in 1990 and later she got elected as the member of Lok Sabha in 1996 from South Delhi Constituency. Sushma Swaraj also became the Union Cabinet Minister for Information and Broadcasting under PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee during their 13-day government in 1996.
5) Union Minister I&B & Telecommunications
Under the second government of Vajpayee, she became the Union Cabinet Minister for Information and Broadcasting and the Ministry of Telecommunications in 1998.
6) Minister for Information and Broadcasting
She became the Union Cabinet as Minister for Information and Broadcasting in the year 2000.
7) Union Health Minister
Sushma Swaraj became the Minister of Health, Family Welfare and Parliamentary Affairs in 2003 and set up six All India Institute of Medical Sciences at Bhopal (MP), Bhubaneshwar (Odisha), Patna (Bihar), Raipur (Chhattisgarh), Jodhpur (Rajasthan), and Rishikesh (Uttrakhand). She also served as the Deputy leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha till April 2009.
8) Leader of Opposition in the 15th Lok Sabha
Sushma Swaraj became the Leader of Opposition in the 15th Lok Sabha 21st December 2009 till May 2014.
9) External Affairs Minister
She became the Indian External Affairs Minister under Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2014. Moreover, she became the second woman to take this position after Indira Gandhi.
