Popularly known as the ‘Father of the Indian Space Program’, Vikram Sarabhai was a key person in the development of ISRO. He established the Indian Space Research Organization alongside some other dedicated scientists in the country. We all know, ISRO is one of the biggest space agencies in the world. - Vikram Sarabhai was actually born as a rich kid. He acquired a massive interest in Science and Mathematics right from his childhood. Sarabhai later went on to finish his higher education in England.
- With an intention to contribute his services in the field of science and technology, he tried a lot in his career. After finishing his graduation in Natural Scienced from Cambridge University’s St. John College in 1940, Vikram joined the Indian Institue of Science in Bangalore and commenced his research on cosmic rays. His research was actually started upon taking suggestion from the popular scientist CV Raman. Sarabhai published his first and foremost scientific paper in the year 1942 with the title ‘Time Distribution of Cosmic Rays’.
- He worked as a Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission and played a crucial role in setting up the IIM in Ahmedabad.
- He tied a knot with a dancer Mrinalini Sarabhai. His family members couldn’t attend their marriage as they were taking part in The Quit India Movement actually launched by Mahatma Gandhi.
- Vikram was awarded the prestigious awards such as Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan in the years 1966 and 1972 respectively.
- Vikram also played a vital role in Missile Man Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam’s career. He acquired support from Dr. Homi Jehangir Bhabha at the time of setting up India’s first rocket launching station near Thiruvananthapuram.
- With his immense hard work and dedication, Sarabhai placed Aryabhata – India’s first satellite in orbit in the year 1975 from a Russian Cosmodrome.
