Last year, a number of people had died in a stampede at a railway station which shook the nation. The stamped on a FOB at Elphinstone Road station on 29 September 2017 claimed the lives of 23 people. Following this incident, The Indian Army was assigned to construct three new FOB.

Recently, a FOB was inaugurated by a flower vendor, as a tribute to those who lost their lives in the stampede last year, in the presence of Railway Minister Piyush Goyal and Maharastra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at Elphinstone Road. The other two foot-bridges are at Currey Road and Ambivli in Mumbai.

The army had initially missed the January 31 deadline for its construction. An official told a leading tabloid, “The initial deadline was January 31, but there was a change of alignment by railways, additional staircase and connected landing which led to the delay.”

Ambivli FOB, 20m long and 3.5m wide, has been built at a cost of Rs 2.7 crore. the cost of construction for FOB on the Currey Road station, which is 30m in length and 3.5m wide, is Rs 3 crore. The Elphinstone Road FOB, which is 70m long and 3.5m wide, has been constructed at the cost of Rs 18 crores.
