Instagram is currently number one photo sharing application in the world. Currently, owned by Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg, Instagram has millions of users worldwide. Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, are its original co-founders. Kevin Systrom had a talent for making photographs look beautiful and Mike Krieger was an extremely talented engineer.
Together they developed an application called ‘Burbn’ which was basically a check-in app. This was quite similar to an app called Foursquare. Systrom says that you need to fail in order to find the right solution and through this failure, the idea for Instagram was born.
They decided to focus their new app mainly on photo sharing and editing and called it ‘Instagram’ which is basically a combination of instant camera and telegram.
On 6 October 2010, Systrom and Krieger worked hard to introduce Instagram to the world. Today, Instagram is the most widely used photo and video sharing mobile app. It is a free application that allows you to click pictures and take videos, to apply a filter or edit them and to share them through various social networking sites like Twitter, Facebook.
In late 2013, Instagram had more than 150 million active monthly users. In 2013, Instagram was awarded a place in the Time’s list of 50 Best Android Applications.
Twitter had proposed to Kevin to buy Instagram for around $500-million. To add to that, Kevin was also being offered a great number of funds from Sequoia Capital as well. Kevin refused Twitter’s offer and also called Mark Zuckerberg about keeping the Instagram independent company as Mark was also interested to buy Instagram. But Mark being a genius didn’t like a no for the answer. After long discussions, Instagram with 13 employees was bought for $1 Billion by Facebook.
Instagram is still managed as an independent company. The company has now expanded its employee base from just 13 to more than 250 members who now housed at Facebook’s main campus in Menlo Park, California. Instagram today has a worth of more than $38 billion.
