The largest planet of our solar system i.e., Jupiter will be close to our planet Earth later tonight. The massive gas giant planet will reach opposition tonight in an annual event which will mark the time when Earth is directly between the gas giant Jupiter and the sun. It simply means the planet is very close to Earth and you can see it hidden in the sky all night long.
After sundown which is later tonight, Jupiter reaches the point of opposition. NASA says that you can see the planet as a brilliant jewel burning in the night sky easily. Space fans can see the planet in the night sky with their naked eye and can also see its moons with a binocular or a small telescope handy as Jupiter is in a prime position right now.
The solar system’s largest planet is a brilliant jewel to the naked eye, but looks fantastic through binoculars or a small telescope, which will allow you to spot the four largest moons, and maybe even glimpse a hint of the banded clouds that encircle the planet,” NASA suggested in a skywatch update.
It’s the best time of the year to see Jupiter, as the planet is visible in the sky all night, and it’s around the time when Jupiter is closest to Earth,” according to NASA.
It will be helpful for those who are in an area with low light pollution. It will become visible on both Monday, June 10 and Saturday, June 15. Tonight, the brightest planet will be at its biggest and brightest as it will be positioned directly opposite to the sun from our Earth point of view.
As compared to last year’s opposition of Jupiter, it will be 11 million miles closer on the night of June 10 making it significantly more illuminated. On June 15, you can look Jupiter towards the southeast side of the sky which will be in a triangular formation with Jupiter and Antares. Antares is a star found in the Scorpius constellation.
