As per the latest rule in the Philippines, the students from their elementary school to college must and should plant at least 10 trees so as to graduate. After passing a bill by the Philippine Congress earlier this month, the Government has taken this initiative. This way, there is a possibility to plant 175 million trees in just a span of one year.
All the young people right from their school to college can achieve this goal of planting millions of trees annually. As a result, one can diminish the effects of deforestation of the increased levels of pollution. On 15th May 2019, the Philippine Congress passed a Bill official. As per the bill, all the students from elementary school, high school, and college or University must plant at least 10 trees or saplings so as to finish their graduation.
There is no exclusive mention of planting trees only in a specific location. The students can plant the trees anywhere in forests, reserves, urban locations, deserted mining locations, mangroves, and domestic territories. One must plant the trees that are helpful in changing the climate of that location. It is preferable to plant indigenous tree species.
The name of this bill is ‘Graduation Legacy for the Environment Act 2016’. One of the Congressmen namely Gary Alejano actually introduced this bill with an intention to support ‘inter-generational responsibility’ over the protection of the environment. Alejano wrote in the explanatory note of the bill as ‘While we recognize the right of the youth to a balanced and healthy ecology… there is no reason why they cannot be made to contribute in order to ensure that this will be an actual reality.’
He further added ‘the initiative would see at least 175 million new trees planted every year, totaling over 525 billion additional trees “in the course of one generation.’ As per the bill, the education department of the respective country holds complete responsibility for executing the new rule. Besides this, the Environment and Agriculture Departments will start supplying seedlings, setting up nurseries and take care of the trees’ growth and progress.
