India is a country where people of various religion live together happily. Different religions have different idols and different ways to worship God. In Hindu religion, pouring milk over the Shiva idol every Monday to pouring oil over the Hanuman idol every Tuesday/Saturday is considered a holy way to worship God. Many people believe it is a waste of edible products while many debates that it is used as devotion to almighty and not wasted. But that’s a topic of debate for later.
On Mahashivratri lots of devotees worship Lord Shiva with milk. Karan Goel and his four friends managed to save about a 100 liters of milk on Shivratri by testing their simple device in the Saket Shiva temple.
“Devotees pour milk on the kalash which is placed right above the shivling. We made two holes in the kalash — one on its base and the other one at a certain height. The kalash had a capacity of seven litres. So we devised a system which ensured that after one litre of milk trickled down on the shivling, the remaining six litres flowed into a container through the pipe attached to the second hole.”
Nishant Singhal, studying BCA from IIMT College, Meerut said in an interview, “We spent only Rs. 2,500 to develop this system. We will be uploading videos on our Facebook page ‘India Against Hunger’ so that it can be replicated by people in other cities”

To ensure that the milk doesn’t get contaminated, they sought expert advice from Parag Milk Foods. Anmol Sharma said, “We were told that the only way to ensure the milk doesn’t get contaminated is by storing it in steel containers and by appealing to the devotees to pour only plain milk on the kalash. Often, people add flower petals and other things to the milk. Through pamphlets, we request such people to pour milk directly on the shivling and not on the kalash.”
This is indeed a great move to save milk and people should surely learn from it about replicating the technique.
