At the start, he sold pens from a shop and later he started manufacturing them on his own.  Surajmal who hails from Rajasthan had a very ordinary childhood.  His father was retired and his two elder brothers used to run the family.  Surajmal was the fifth one among six siblings and was pampered a lot.

After finishing high school, he used to walk around 18 km to go to the college.  He said, “My family couldn’t bear the expense of my traveling and asked me to study nearer to the house, “but I did not want to as the college where I was studying imparted quality education.”

At the age of 19, Surajmal decided to leave to Kolkata where his other friends used to reside citing the wide range of business opportunities there.”

He said, “I had no money in my pocket when I left the house, somehow, I managed to buy a ticket for the third-tier general class and my family packed food for the journey.”

Surajmal joined a carpet showroom at Harrison Road in north Kolkata at a pay of Rs. 60 monthly.  After working for a year, he quit the job and started working in a comb-manufacturing company.  Later, he joined rice mill and tea gardens and was appointed as an assistant manager at a monthly pay of Rs 500.

He later invested Rs 5,000 from his savings from a job and started the business.

“I began going door-to-door to sell pens. It was then that I realized that there were no good quality pens in the country.”

He later opened a retail counter for pens at Bagree Market. He took a room of his in-laws and started a manufacturing unit with an investment of Rs. 10, 000.  His dream to start his own brand made him win big in reality.  With 3 lakhs investment he started to manufacture his own brand pens ‘Linc’ and at present the company’ss annual turnover is Rs. 350 crores.
