Renowned Bengali actress Supriya Devi dies at 85; Bengali film industry plunges into grief

As per latest reports, Veteran Bengali movie actress Supriya Devi lost her life owing to severe cardiopulmonary arrest at her home early morning. She was survived by her daughter.

The well-known actress was 85 years old. Born during the year 1933, Supriya Devi was recognized for her wonderful work for more than five decades.

She entered the film world with Uttam Kumar-starrer Basu Parivar during the year 1952. She never looked back after Sonar Harin with Uttam Kumar during the year 1959. Some of Supriya’s classics comprise Chowringhee, Bagh Bandi Khela, and Meghe Dhaka Tara.

A few of her other contemporaries and co-actors comprise Soumitra Chatterjee and Sabitri Chattopadhyay.

She bagged the Padma Shri and West Bengal administration’s highest civilian honor Banga Vibhushan, in addition to the Filmfare East Lifetime Achievement honor.

In a special tweet West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee stated, “Very saddened at the passing of legendary actress of Bengal, Supriya Chowdhury (Debi). We will fondly remember her through her films. Condolences to her family and fans.”

Expressing heartache at the demise of Supriya Devi, renowned actor Soumitra Chatterjee, who worked with her in the flick Jodi Jantem in addition to many others, stated that they had together been in movies for several decades.

Supriya Devi’s contemporary and veteran actress Sabitri Chattopadhyay stated, “I cannot believe this news. We regularly talked over phone.”

West Bengal Power Minister Sovandeb Chattopadhyay visited Supriya Devi’s residence to pay tributes and stated arrangements were being made in aid of the state administration for the final ceremonies.
