SDMC Proposes To Ban The Display Of Non-Veg Food; Twitterati In Anger

When we walk the streets, the first thing that grabs our eyeballs instantly is street food, especially non-veg food.  Most of the shops keep the non-vegetarian foods in a display outside their shops with an idea to attract the customers.  It is a marketing trick that every shopkeeper who owns a shop that sells food follow without hitting miss.

However, with the latest development, this may discontinue in the coming future.  The South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) has come up with a new proposal to ban the display of non-vegetarian food in the streets.  It proposed not to display such foods in open.  It has put before the said proposal in the last House meeting that was held on December 20.  The proposal even got an approval from the leader of the House Shikha Rai.

Rai said that the proposal was aimed to “maintain hygiene and to respect people’s sentiments since not everyone eats non-vegetarian food”.  For now, the proposal needs to be approved by SDMC commissioner P K Goel, who will examine if the said proposal is in accordance with the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act before making it a rule.

SDMC’s proposal to ban non-veg display gets thumbs down

The reason that was shown by SDMC on proposing the ban of non-veg in open is that it is prone to contamination and that it hurts the sentiments of the vegetarian people.

Raj Dutt, a councilor from Kakrola village in the Najafgarh zone said, “Seekh kebabs being displayed outside may get contaminated due to pollution. Also, there are many vegetarian people who feel bad seeing these items.”

Nevertheless, the proposal has not gone down well with the social media users and they gave some fitting answers as well.

One Twitter user wrote “This is when Fundamentalism Peaks.
Delhi is known for its rich Mughlai Cuisine and other Non-Veg dishes which date back to centuries! Delhi started the culture of Open Street Food including Chat!

People of Delhi LIVE their Food!”

Another Twitter user wrote “Yessss! Now let’s put a curfew in Delhi. From 9pm onwards, no people on streets too. Why stop only to non-veg food.”

Twitter user whose handle goes by the name Anandita Malhotra wrote “Paneer displayed on the streets, hurt my sentiments. What about that!?”

The SDMC’s proposal reads: “It has been seen that non-vegetarian food items are displayed publicly by restaurant owners. By doing so, there is danger of contamination to non-vegetarian food items. It also hurts the sentiments of the vegetarian public.”
