Devarapalli Prakash Rao is a tea seller from Odisha. From past 50 years, he has been selling tea. Recently, on January 25 he got the biggest achievement of his lifetime. He was conferred with India’s fourth civilian award, Padma Shri. However, being a tea seller he is different from everyone.

This tea seller has been imparting education to 80 children who are living in slum areas, which makes him a unique among all. He uses his earnings which it gets as a tea vendor and uses it for among 80 children. Rao wakes up early at 4 am in the morning and runs his tea stall until 10 am. Despite earning very low, he runs a school for these poor slum area kids.

He is truly an inspiration. His hard work and dedication towards teaching these kids made him earn this honorable award. Rao has always loved education and has a keen interest in reading and writing. His father always wanted him to lend a helping hand in his tea business. Even before he could clear class 10th, he had to quit his studies and joined his father’s work.

Later, when his father fell sick, he got busy with the tea kettles and paying bills. He started running the tea stall that became his priority. And because of this work pressure on him, he had to forget about his dreams. But a small concern runs around his mind when he would see these small slum children.

Later in 2000 he started working on his dream and opened up a small school, Asha O Ashwasana. Somehow he convinced slum parents to enroll their children to his school. His school is up to Class III, after which he gets the children enrolled in a government school. Rao not only looks on their academics but also takes the pride to make them excel in sports competitions. Initially, he had to bear all the expenses of their education but now he is getting help from a lot of people.
