After Saroj Khan, Rakhi Sawant Admits There Is Casting Couch In Bollywood

After, Saroj Khan made breaking headline on talking about casting couch and blaming the Film industry alone is unfair and there are many other areas where a girl’s advantage is taken. Now, drama queen Rakhi Sawant join the ongoing debate on the casting couch in the film industry.

Rakhi too joined the ongoing casting couch debate and admitted that she also become the victim of it:

“When I was a struggler, yes I did face the casting couch. But it wasn’t as if every producer or director I approached was guilty. As in every walk of life, there is sexual corruption in the film industry also. As far as I was concerned, this was just in the beginning. But I had talent and I didn’t have to give in. I learned to say no. And I used my talent as an artist to make my way through life. I suggest all strugglers have patience and not surrender to the temptation of shortcuts.”

She supports the ace choreograph Saroj Khan and said:

“Nobody rapes anyone in this film industry. It’s all consensual and voluntary. In this, I fully support Sarojji. At least she has spoken her mind and let the world know the truth. People in Bollywood don’t speak out the truth about the casting couch although it is happening right here in front of their eyes. They feel they are making their way up why should they bother with what’s happening around them? I really admire Sarojji for letting the world know the reality that they have to face every day. Sarojji has seen what goes here. I totally agree with her.”

She also opened up about wild sexual favors in the film industry and said:

“Young girls are willing to make any compromise to get going in their career. Aaj kal to ladkiyan kehti hain, Kuch bhi kar lo, mujhe kaam de do’. Iss mein producer ki kya ghalti hai? (Girls, these days, are ready to do anything to get work. Why to blame producers for this?) Sarojji is not wrong. A lot of girls come in the film industry to become heroines but become something else… you understand what I am saying? Call it destiny or what you will.”

To all the newcomers or youngsters who wanted to enter in industry, she said:

“Have faith in your talent. Have patience. Don’t give in to shortcuts. I’ve seen so many girls throw themselves at producers. This is not good. I don’t want to take any names. Lekin aisa hota hai (But this happens). It shouldn’t be so. Salman Khan and Priyanka Chopra are superstars because of their hard work and not for any other reason. The ones who take the shortcut end up on a different track altogether. Don’t do this to yourself. And don’t blame producers for taking what you have to offer.”

Top Innovative Companies that Help Mom Sleep at Night

Mother’s Day is just around the corner.  As we know, moms wear multiple hats, not just taking on the task of taking care of the smallest members of the family.  They are often going around the clock. To keep going, moms need a good night’s sleep. That way, they can recharge their batteries and take it all on again the next day.

However, life doesn’t always give them that good night of sleep. That’s where technology has been able to step in and help. Some of today’s most innovative connected companies have developed solutions that give all those moms out there a few more Zs.

Snoo Bassinet

Snoo

Exhaustion is mom’s number one stressor.  Sleeping like your baby? Up every hour on the hour? This is not how moms want to sleep.  Snoo is an innovative connected bassinet device that keeps baby safe and comforted. Using white noise, swaddling, and a gentle rocking, baby will be to sleep in no time — and so will Mom.

Ecobee

We all kid about our refrigerator talking to us.  How about the light switch? All these connected devices are great because it means less work for us. Now, the same goes for the thermostat. After all, once Mom hits the pillow, she should not have to get up again even to turn up the temperature in a particular room.

Ecobee is the upstart competitor to Nest and is emerging as the clear leader.  Now, it’s possible to use the connected device to just heat up just the baby’s room with just one control. With help from Amazon, every mom can go to bed once and stay there until morning.

Naturebox Healthy Snacks

naturebox mom
Moms make lunch every day for their families. However, there are those days where moms discover not everything goes as planned and there’s not enough time to make a good lunch for your kids. Or, there may fewer healthy ideas. Certainly, there has to be something better than Doritos Chips and Chips Ahoy Cookies.

Rather than staying up at night worrying about your kids’ nutrition, try Naturebox.  Not only are the snacks featured in these curated food boxes healthier, the selections taste great.  The company offers online ordering to connect moms directly to a very convenient way to create delicious, easy to make lunches each day.

Kwik.me

Among the long list of tasks that moms have to handle each day is getting dinner on the table for the family. And, that includes dinner in the dish for the family pet. Also, there is the laundry and cleaning to do. What often happens is that all these tasks end up leading to memory loss about what’s in the pantry and what was long used up. Not to mention the rest of the family who forgot to tell you they finished up those chips.

That’s where Kwik helps moms rest easy. It makes sure you’re never short of laundry detergent, dog food and more.  Plus, moms can skip those last-minute trips to the store. All you do is press the Kwik button and get a text message that confirms the online order that was just made.

Greenlight Card

When was the last time you reached into your wallet to fish out a $5 dollar bill to hand to your tween kid for a stop at the grocery store but you only had a $20?  “Bring me my change back!” As you are saying that, you are also realizing that you’ll never see that change again.

Now upstart Atlanta-based Greenlight solves this problem. Plus, they’ll give your kids a sense of financial responsibility and freedom to put that mind at ease. Your child gets a card with the MasterCard symbol on it as well as their name on it.  It allows you to give your kids spending money without wondering how you’ll get the change back. In fact, you can even specify what store they can spend the money at

Reso.io

Moms start to lose sleep when they realize school breaks are just around the corner. Now, that organized, relatively peaceful day will be filled with kids wandering around the house letting you know they are bored.

That’s where Reso comes to the rescue. This innovative company has curated local day camps, workshops, activities, and groups in local areas to help moms find and book places for their kids to make new friends, get exercise, and learn new things.

Circle Home with Disney

While electronic devices and apps are great for entertaining kids, the problems moms face as the constant monitoring and nagging about not spending too much time on them, especially when homework and chores come first. What if you never had to ask your kid to get off Facebook? Imagine if Netflix or YouTube had a time limit no matter what device your kid was on.

Circle Home pairs wirelessly with your home Wi-Fi. From there, moms can easily manage every device on that network. Using the Circle app means greater control over screen time while avoiding the arguments that cause moms stress.

Skybell Doorbell

Every Tiger Mom wants to make sure their house is safe whether they are home with the kids or have stepped out to run an errand while the teenager of the house is left in charge of their little siblings.

Skybell provides a way to ensure everyone is safe by watching whoever approaches the front door whether they ring the doorbell or not. The Wi-Fi-enabled doorbell has a camera and allows you to talk to the person at the door through a smartphone app even if you are not home at the time. This provides reassurance and dissuades any would-be criminal from seeing your home as an easy target.

igloohome Smart Lock

Now that Mom knows who is at the door she can control who comes and goes. With the new Smart Lock Deadbolt 02 by Igloo Home, granting real-time access to the home for the cleaning crew, babysitter or relative is a simple keystroke away.

With no-wifi needed and blutooth capable, this is one of the smartest, most advanced heavy-duty deadbolt locks on the market.

Pubnub Secure IOT Network and Chat Engine

While all these devices are great, how about installing, keeping them up and running and secure?  Pubnub is the world’s largest real-time network that handles all the details, including communication with devices like Snoo. They make sure your families data is secure from being broadcast over the internet. They even handle the secure chat application so that you can talk to support during the install.

T-mobile Sync-up Drive by Moj.io

Moms worry, but their worry reaches new heights when any one of their “babies” starts to drive a vehicle. However, more vehicles and carriers like T-Mobile are starting to introduce ways to help lower this anxiety.

Solutions like Sync-up Drive powered by Moj.io  tell mom where the family car is at all times.  Whether there is a check engine light or the car is stuck on the side of the road, Mom can be kept in the loop at all times.

JavaPresse

Javapresse

Very busy mom needs some good sleep but when they wake up a little help staying motivated (and caffeinated). Making sure everybody gets to school, makes it to soccer, has clean clothes, eats a snack, and gets their homework done can be exhausting.

That’s where solutions like JavaPresse Coffee Company can come in handy. This specialty coffee club focused on fresh-roasted coffee, shipping every box out within two hours of roasting. JavaPresse’s all-natural and organically grown beans can help moms feel better about their contribution to the planet — and a lot better about their energy levels throughout the day. Best of all? No last-minute grocery store stops for coffee with their new monthly coffee delivery program.

When Mom is Happy

When moms get rest, they are happier and don’t focus on the many worries that often come to mind with a lack of sleep. With these 10 innovative connected device solutions, moms everywhere can sleep more soundly, worry less, and feel confident that their children, families, and homes are secure.

Orangeworm Attacks Vulnerable Medical Industry

Hacker group’s activity first picked up by Symantec cybersecurity.

When patients think of cutting edge medical innovation, things like the Leonardo camera-guided robotic surgery come to mind, or the ability to send a capsule-sized camera through the digestive tract to diagnose potentially life-threatening medical conditions. Most people probably aren’t envisioning diagnostic equipment that’s still running Windows XP, and is therefore highly vulnerable to cyberattacks.

Symantec first noticed the activity of a hacker group called Orangeworm in 2016, but its standard method of exploiting backdoors to install the same malware is on the rise. Of the recent targets, found in more than 20 countries, 40% of the businesses hit by their attacks were in the medical industry. This is largely possible because equipment like x-ray machines, MRI scanners, and other installed high-dollar diagnostic tools are often still running older operating systems that don’t have the capability to recognize and fend off some newer threats.

New Orangeworm attack group targets the healthcare sector in the U.S., Europe, and Asia

New Orangeworm attack group targets the healthcare sector in the US, Europe, and Asia

Sloppy

Orangeworm seems to be on the lower end of the sophistication spectrum. Reportedly not a state-sponsored group, they’re also not sloppily casting a wide net and hoping to land on something useful and vulnerable. Rather, there seems to be intention in what they’re doing and who they’re targeting, which speaks to a broader concern for many industries: if you have mission-critical technology in place that cannot simply be recycled at Geek Squad and upgraded every time something newer comes to market, you may already be in a hacker’s crosshairs.

Vulnerabilities

A hospital cannot simply haul off its entire radiology wing and replace it with newer equipment, nor can they shut down all operations for a week while they install and train staff members on the new network. That very scenario has left the medical field vulnerable for some time, and could explain the rampant rise in ransomware attacks that have been launched in just the past few years. The healthcare industry needs a better way to upgrade and keep up, one that will not disrupt the vital work they do.

MJ’s #Thriller has just released. That’s an inspired 8 year old me doing nonsense, but to Mom and Dad, I was Jackson that night.

This picture was back in the 1982, when the Hrithik was just 8 years old and the famous artist Michael Jackson’s; ‘Thriller’ album was released. 3 Efforts Being Taking in STEM Fields to Increase Diversity

STEM fields are varied, exciting, and promise excellent opportunities to students who enroll. Students who successfully complete their coursework have boundless opportunities in exciting fields like biomedicine, software development, product design engineering, medical practices, chemistry, computer and information sciences, and more.

Diversity is very important for STEM fields, but it’s not where it should be. STEM fields have perhaps the largest biases when it comes to cultural and gender diversity. Women hold 57 percent of professional occupations, according to the National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT). However, only 26 percent of technology jobs, 19 percent of software development jobs, and 6 percent of technology leadership jobs are held by women.

If you’re a woman from a minority race, the numbers are even worse. NCWIT research also showed that only about 3 percent of technology jobs are held by Latinas and 1 percent are held by African American women.

“Looking at population demographics, we see large percentages of women and minorities that are present in the overall population, but largely absent in the STEM workplace,” Patty Lopez, Senior Platform Applications Engineer at Intel, told Huffington Post in an interview.

“We know from the field of user design that excluding women from the design of car airbags had a deadly effect, as women were generally shorter and sat closer to the steering wheel,” she continues. “We’ve found that women show different symptoms for heart attacks than men, yet women were excluded from medical trials that studied heart disease….If we don’t include a more diverse group in the design process, we risk losing out on vital innovation and competitive advantage.”

The volume of minorities taking part in these careers is largely underdeveloped, and there’s much more that can be done. Thankfully, many schools and corporations are taking an interest in increasing diversity in STEM.

1. Diversity-Specialized Education

History shows cultural biases against both women and minorities pursuing STEM fields in higher education or the workplace. There are many factors that contribute to that, including demographics, but one of the best ways to combat this growing issue is to offer better educational programs for those who might find challenges otherwise.

In an article on encouraging more diversity in education, Gary Shapiro of Recode.net argues that enabling education for diversities is the best place to start.

“Diversity is our American strength,” says Shapiro. “It propels innovation and our economy. Just as our innovation success stems from a culture and Constitution promoting free expression, we can go further by taking advantage of all the talent we have.”

There are a variety of diversity-specialized education courses around the world, including Girls Who Code, a program designed to equip female high school students with the knowledge, resources, and skillsets they’ll need to achieve STEM opportunities in computing.

2. Boosting Recruitment Measures

One of the primary challenges for diversifying STEM fields is found in recruitment. Companies are either biased against minorities and females (intentionally or unintentionally), or they fail to make their available jobs attractive to this group.

“It’s time to make technology companies more attractive to women in the job market,” argues Kieren Jameson, MLIS and Digital Solutions Manager for ETR. For example, companies can remove the bias in job descriptions by taking language that is strongly masculine-themed (e.g., ambitious, active, analytical, determined, decisive) and replacing it with words that are less strongly gendered (e.g., collaborative, committed, dependable, responsible, supportive).”

Jameson also recommends removing requirements that aren’t necessary for doing the job. She says that steps can be taken to limit the bias by hiring managers as well.

“They can give hiring managers ‘blind’ résumés that have been stripped of gender identifiers,” she continues. “They can track their diversity stats. They can ask different sorts of questions during interviews.”

3. Creating More Mentorships

There are also subconscious biases in mentorship programs. If you’re a white man in a U.S. STEM industry, it’s a lot easier to find a mentorship than if you’re an African American woman. People tend to offer mentorships to people who remind them of themselves, and since white men dominate the STEM industry, fewer diverse mentorships follow.

Most people who climb the corporate ladder, particularly in STEM, did so because they had someone to help them along the way. Minorities and females are often left out and fail to receive a necessary helping hand for success.

Organizations who commit to mentoring outside their normal scope can help to break down this barrier. For example, Salesforce CEO Mark Benioff started an initiative called Women Surge, which means that between 30 and 50 percent of every meeting attendance had to be composed of women.

To accomplish this, he encouraged all high-level managers to invite high-performing female executives of all races to sit in on the meetings. This offered these women valuable networking and an opportunity to excel in the STEM field.

When organizations use their imagination and push the limits facing minority cultures and genders, they can accomplish great things in the realm of STEM.

During her recent media interaction, Priyanka was asked, she has been writing about sex and sexuality for a long time and it was hard for her parents, who are from India, to accept that. Are there people in her community or her family that are like, ‘Priyanka, that’s a little steamy, I don’t know’?”

Priyanka boldly expressed her thoughts on the same and said, “I’ve not because Hindi movies and what we do in Indian movies is pretty much what I’m doing on Quantico. There are a few lines that I’ve drawn for myself which obviously include nudity but the fact that I’m an actor and if sensuality or sexuality presented by the story, people work within my comfort. I’m totally fine and my parents were fine with that. From the beginning of my career I’ve just been a modern Indian girl and I am not afraid. I’ve been raised in a fearless environment, whether that was in India or in America. My family is very progressive, very opinionated. I was never made to feel guilty or ashamed by my family and my loved ones because I don’t think anything I did I deserved that. I don’t have too many … What’s the word? Chocolate fudges to give.”

CRAs Add New Tools To Fight Identity Theft

Credit reference agencies respond to data breaches with new software and tech.

Last year, one of the three major US credit reporting agencies experienced a data breach that compromised the complete identities of more than 145 million people worldwide. Interestingly, not only were the victims not informed in a timely manner, the very nature of credit reporting agencies means you have no choice but to let them gather and store your data. If you exist as a shopper, you have (or do not have, as the case may be) a credit file; the information contained in it was not necessarily handed over to them voluntarily, but rather came through some form of application process.

Credit reference agencies respond to data breaches with new software and tech.

Experian now uses a suite of identification tools on its website and mobile app.

Equifax

When Equifax was hacked, it took a significant amount of time for the public to be made aware. As a result of their lax security, the agency is responsible for providing free credit monitoring for the affected victims. Some advocacy groups are also calling on the government to enact legislation that allows consumers to freeze and unfreeze their credit without a fee; as it stands, the three CRAs make a profit on the fees associated with requesting your credit report, locking up your credit to prevent new accounts from being opened in your name, and more.

New tools

Experian, another CRA, has incorporated a suite of consumer-centric tools into its website and mobile app in order to help you identify whether or not your data has been compromised, as well as view your credit report, freeze or “thaw” your credit, and more. Some of these tools are available free of charge, such as viewing your report or finding out if your Social Security number is for sale on any of the 600,000 monitored Dark Web websites. Other tools, such as credit monitoring and freezing, come with a cost that can be paid directly through the website (as opposed to submitting payment by check or money order, as in the past).

Big business

Together, the three major CRAs–Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion–make about $9 billion in revenue each year from the fees associated with gathering, storing, and selling consumer data.

Iran Central Bank Bans Banks From Cryptocurrency Dealings

The central bank of Iran has banned domestic banks and other financial institutions from dealing in cryptocurrencies, claiming that the digital currency is being used for money-laundering, and also in an attempt to halt an emerging currency crisis.

The Iranian State News Agency, IRNA, reported the news two weeks ago, quoting a quoting an apparent leaked central bank document from Iran’s anti-money laundering body.

“Banks and credit institutions and currency exchanges should avoid any sale or purchase of these currencies or taking any action to promote them”, the IRNA report said. A leak from another source quoted by Coin Telegraph, said that: “All cryptocurrencies have the capacity to be turned into a means for money-laundering and financing terrorism and in general can be turned into a means for transferring criminals’ money”.

The central bank of Iran has banned domestic banks and other financial institutions from dealing in cryptocurrencies, claiming that the digital currency is being used for money-laundering, and also in an attempt to halt an emerging currency crisis.

Iran is believed to have banned all trading in cryptocurrencies.

Raft of measures

The ban has been implemented alongside several other fiscal measures implemented by the Iranian government in recent weeks including the banning of any and all money being allowed to be changed outside of official banking institutions.

Support the Rial

The moves have been made by Iran to try and shore up its national currency, the Rial, which in recent times has hit all time lows. The imminent likelihood that the USA is likely to re-apply economic sanctions on the country has also had an effect.

Digital currency launch?

That would however not appear to be the full story. The move to ban trading in cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin, may also just be Iran’s opening gambit in launching its own national digital currency, similar to that launched by Venezuela, the Petro last year.

Minister’s tweet

In February, Iran’s Minister of Information and Communications Technology, Mohammad-Javad Azari Jahromi, tweeted that the country’s state-run banks would be seeking to develop their own digital coins.

Time will tell how successful such a move will be, but with no other competing currencies to worry about, a domestically launched digital currency would probably succeed.

Success Story Of Common Floor’s Co-Founder Sumit Jain Is What We Should Read Now

Everyone wants the very good property where they can invest and make their dream home, but usually, it is not that easy. Back in 2007, among that property searcher, Sumit Jain was the one who couldn’t find the right property. And, from where the journey started.

CommonFloor, the real estate company which is founded by the trio Sumit Jain, Lalit Mangal and Vikas Malpani. Right now, becomes one of the largest online real estate portals in India.

However, they three have gone through many ups and downs that Sumit Jain, the co-founder of the company has shared in a recent interview with the leading portal.

In an interview with Yourstory, Sumit revealed the different aspect of his success journey, here you go:

When he asked to tell from where he started, he said, “The initial thought was to develop a platform that could bring together people who live in gated communities and had come up with CommonFloor.com in November 2007. It was a challenge initially to get communities on board and we had to come up with several iterations to get the product right. We also had to keep the product flexible enough to accommodate different priorities of different communities while still ensuring a good user experience for all. The real confidence came when the communities that adopted us in the beginning started to see real value in our product, appreciated our efforts and even partnered with us in improving it. That is when we started believing that CommonFloor.com will work.”

He revealed how CommonFloor has evolved by saying, “Our vision was always to satisfy all requirements of a person around his home. In the initial years, we noticed a lot of owners using our platform to post listings of their apartments. We realized that if we open this information to people outside their gated communities, it will add much more value to these owners. Soon we started to be known as the best place for genuine listings and started seeing a lot of traction from those looking for a house to buy/sell or rent. We then started making deliberate efforts to build our capabilities in real estate and today we are the third largest real estate portal in the country in terms of unique visitors as per comScore.”

There is no doubt that the company has crossed the very big milestone and revealing his terms of traction Sumit added, “We are the fastest growing real estate portal in the country growing by more than 100% year on year as per comScore. In Bangalore, we are the number one property portal as per Alexa traffic rank. Today, we have more than 1000 paying customers that include builders, agents and vendors. Our revenue has been growing by more than 100% every quarter and we aim to achieve a turnover of $25 million in the next two years.” “We have more than 60,000 projects listed on our portal and this is the largest compared to any property portal in India. The number of property listings has grown by more than 500% in the past financial year and we currently have more than one lakh live active listings.” he added.

Over the year the team has build up and now he has, “We are more than 400 people now and are looking to hire more. I think what has worked for us has been the mindset change amongst talented Indians when it comes to making a career decision. Not everyone today is satisfied with a 9 to 5 job at an MNC. Young Indians today want to make a difference at what they do. They are willing to take risks and join young and innovative Indian companies. They understand that they can grow faster and make a big difference when they join a company that is on a growth track. The fact that we have scaled fast and people have grown with us has also helped, particularly with referrals.”

Very important to note down what keeps the co-founder going as an entrepreneur, “We are really passionate about how we can use technology to solve people’s requirements around their homes. Home is where we spend most of our time and 70% of our daily use expenditure is made in the radius of 2 km of our home. Yet, we pay no attention to improving the quality of living around our homes. I think the team at Commonfloor.com has a great opportunity to change the way communities live. To be able to drive that change and have that kind of positive impact on society is a huge motivating factor.”

Facebook Moves Millions Of Users Data To US To Avoid European Privacy Laws

Zuckerberg’s promise to uphold ‘spirit’ of new EU data protection rules quietly put to the side just days after making it…

The social media giant, Facebook has begun moving user data from its servers in Ireland back to the USA in order to avoid having to comply with new European legislation and to take advantage of laws that favor corporate entities over the rights of individuals.

By changing its terms of service, and moving the data States side, some 1.5 billion members will not be protected under tough new privacy protections coming to Europe. According to the BBC, the move will “affect more than 70% of its more than two billion members. As of December, Facebook had 239 million users in the US and Canada and 370 million in Europe”.

Facebook is moving millions of users data to the USA so it doesn't have to comply with new data protection laws.

Facebook is moving millions of users data to the USA so it doesn’t have to comply with new data protection laws.

GDPR: European law change

The move is due to come into effect shortly before General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) comes into force in Europe on 25 May. The new rules mean that Facebook would be liable under GDPR for fines of up to 4% of its global turnover, if it keeps its user data within the EU. “The GDPR and EU consumer law set out specific rules for terms and data policies which we have incorporated for EU users. We have been clear that we are offering everyone who uses Facebook the same privacy protections, controls and settings, no matter where they live,” said Stephen Deadman, deputy chief global privacy officer at Facebook.

In the spirit

Earlier this month, when asked whether his company would promise GDPR protections to its users worldwide, Zuckerberg dodged answering the question, saying “we’re still nailing down details on this, but it should directionally be, in spirit, the whole thing.”

Facebook told Reuters, “we apply the same privacy protections everywhere, regardless of whether your agreement is with Facebook Inc or Facebook Ireland”. It said the change was only carried out “because EU law requires specific language” in mandated privacy notices, which US law does not”.

Cake and eat it

Facebook will continue to lodge its revenue through Facebook’s Irish office, to take advantage of its low 10% Corporation tax rate, but for privacy protections, they will deal with the company’s headquarters in California.

Not that Facebook are the only company moving its data. Several other US multinationals have recently made the switch as well. LinkedIn, for example, will move its own non-EU users to the US branch on 8 May. “We’ve simply streamlined the contract location to ensure all members understand the LinkedIn entity responsible for their personal data,” it told Reuters.

Mallika Sherawat said, “India Is Land Of Gang Rapists”; gets thrashed on Twitter

In India, rapes have been increasing like anything. Social media, newspaper, news channels everyone is talking about rapes cases and even many are condemning the heinous crimes increasing day by day.

Recently, Mallika Sherawat raised her voice against this and during the screening of “Daas Dev”, she didn’t hesitate to speak about such cases too.

Mallika said, “I think what’s happening with women and children of this country is absolutely shameful. From the land of Gandhi, we have become a land of gang rapists and I think it’s the media in the country that is really a strong force today. So all hopes are pinned on the media.”

Further, she added, “If it’s not in the media, then nobody would know about these cases. I think because of pressure from the media, these new laws have been enforced. So we are really thankful to the media for this. We haven’t been able to protect women and children of our country and I have been reading about such kind of crimes on a daily basis in newspapers.”

But Mallika’s statement doesn’t go well with the Twitterati’s and got slammed by them. They didn’t take it well.

Here are the tweets where many criticized Malaika:

The Problem With Believing Coding Is No Longer Important

Artificial intelligence is topping headlines. Whether it’s self-driving cars or Alexa storing your grocery preferences, it seems that AI is finding its way in to just about everything these days, and the implications for daily life and work over the next decade are likely to be significant.

Many jobs are at risk for disruption, and cities across the country are thinking about how to prepare their economies for a world in which AI is everywhere. Nothing is safe from speculation, so it should come as no surprise that even coding has come under scrutiny as a skill that may become obsolete in this brave new artificially intelligent world. As one Quartz article put it, coding may soon become “as useful as learning ancient Greek.”

In recent years, the “learn to code” movement has exploded. It seems everyone — from politicians to tech industry leaders — has become a champion of the importance of learning to code. Programs like Code.org strive to make exposure to coding more ubiquitous for kids across the country and advocate for more robust computer science curriculum for all students. Coding bootcamps have popped up all across the country to target this very phenomenon.

This calls into question: Is the coding movement overhyped? Is there value to learning to code, or is it just one more skill that will be automated by artificial intelligence?

The logic of the cynics is relatively simple: AI systems are starting to learn how to develop code, which could make programming more intuitive, less specialized, and more capable of automating. It is already true that programming languages are constantly evolving — while you probably would have run into a programmer with extensive knowledge of Perl in the 1990s, today, you’re more likely to meet someone with Python or JavaScript skills. As the building blocks of technology, it’s only natural that as the tech industry evolves, coding languages will as well.

The above-mentioned Quartz article rightly points out that the ultimate objective of programming is to communicate what you want a system to do. It’s true that before long, AI will make that communication feedback loop much easier for people who have no idea how to write code. What implications does that have for businesses? For employees in tech? For students and younger generations? We’ve been told for around a decade that coding is the No. 1 skill for workers to have, but does that assertion still hold true?

This kind of thinking is counterintuitive. The question is not which specific tasks will be automated, but rather what types of skills will be perpetually important. In practical terms, we’re nowhere near the level of automated coding capability that would put developers out of a job. Businesses and employees who make decisions based on the assumption that coding is close to obsolete will be sorely disappointed.

More importantly, however, the capacity to solve problems as well as the ability to understand how technical systems work and improve upon them will only grow in importance as technical systems come to govern more of our daily processes.

As more industries incorporate artificial intelligence into their operations, most of the U.S. workforce will require a basic knowledge of coding. AI will create more technologically advanced careers as it displaces some of the more labor-intensive jobs. As a result, human labor will become more specialized and technical, requiring at least a basic understanding of how these systems operate.

Automated Coding Has a Long Way to Go

Automated code generation won’t be perfected in the near future, and even as it gains popularity, there will be limits to what it can do. GitHub is giving automated coding a shot on its platform, but it’s in an early stage.

Right now, GitHub’s automated coding is simply evaluating code to discover whether it’s relying on packages with known vulnerabilities. When it finds one, it might suggest a fix. None of it requires the creative thinking that actual coding needs. That’s hardly taking over any jobs or making coding an obsolete language.

There are other systems testing automated coding, too. For instance, for AI to reliably create code, it’s essential for it to understand the problem you’re trying to solve. Microsoft and Cambridge have taken a step in making this possible with their DeepCoder algorithm, but, again, it’s a relatively small step.

Researchers showed DeepCoder how basic code is used to solve simple math problems. When given a new problem, the algorithm solves it by predicting what would have been used to solve similar problems. It learns how to create its own solutions. It’s extremely impressive, but the algorithm can only work with a few lines of code. Entire programming languages are far too complex for the tool to sort out.

For the foreseeable future, technologically skilled humans will be needed to understand how programming code is being utilized, realize its potential to increase productivity, and make relevant decisions based on that knowledge.

Skills That Can’t Be Automated

Learning basic coding skills provides the building blocks to make a system function; furthermore, these skills empower humans to fully understand the role of technology in society and the ways it can be controlled to solve problems. To Apple CEO Tim Cook, coding is the most important second language for kids to learn. “It’s the language that everyone needs,” he says, “and not just for computer scientists…you can [use it to] express yourself to 7 billion people in the world.”

It is impossible to know exactly where innovations in automation will lead. That being said, it will likely lead to a world where even more of life and jobs involve interacting with technology. In that case, having a greater level of literacy in how to build, manage, and iterate technical systems will be a boon. Thus, learning to code — at least enough to gain insight into these systems — will remain valuable.

Much of automation will focus on taking over a large share of the more mundane tasks. In fact, according to futurist Martin Ford, jobs that will most likely be automated are those that are repetitious and predictable. The creativity to solve problems in ways that benefit everyone, to shift a company’s focus from one goal to the next, and to respond fluidly to trends and outside influences will continue to be important no matter what systems are being used. These are the very skills that learning to code cultivates.

As many industries become more dependent on automation, more computing jobs will be needed in those industries, not fewer. Again, coding requires a certain level of creativity to solve problems, and automated artificial intelligence hasn’t mastered this skill — it’s still rule-based.

The ability to build and cultivate relationships with people is vital in many different industries; it’s yet another area where, for the foreseeable future, humans have the upper hand to machines. From medical professionals and their patients to businesses and their clients, relationships are the backbone of many companies’ strategies. While jobs that require such skills won’t disappear, the required skills for these jobs will become more advanced as they incorporate AI into other processes.

Even as AI gets smarter and potentially develops greater ability to generate code, it won’t replace the need for human coders. It will, however, create a need for coders to be more creative and beef up their data science and AI skills, as well as learn new technologies like how to code for IoT products and platforms. As more people learn to code, they’ll be able to more effectively harness new technology to identify issues, create solutions, and change how the world works.

As technology and languages are always changing, learning to code encourages lifelong learning, a habit that will only become more vital in the future. This is why disregarding the importance of coding is dangerous. Those who assume that learning code will soon be useless will be discouraged from acquiring those new skills — and that’s when their jobs will truly be at risk.

We’re still in the early stages of AI, and coding skills will be essential to moving it forward. As technology and artificial intelligence take more of a hold on our economy, the ability to code will only become more integral to each company, industry, and the economy as a whole.

How transshipment may undercut Trump’s tariffs

President Donald Trump is vowing to crack down on deceptive transshipment. That is the practice of moving cargo from one country to another by way of a third nation to evade trade restrictions.

As an international economist, I have researched the impact of imported textiles and apparel on those industries in North Carolina over the last 20 years. Based on this recent history, I believe it will be hard for Trump to succeed.

Indirect routes

Not all transshipments are intentionally misleading. For example, a car shipped from Stockholm, Sweden, to Montreal, Canada, may first travel to New York City’s port, before being transferred to another boat, a train or a tractor-trailer for the NYC-Montreal leg of the trip.

These indirect routes can reduce costs when they let shipping companies move more freight on their busiest routes.

But the Trump administration claims something else is going on with Chinese steel. Washington is accusing Chinese steelmakers of routing their U.S.-bound product through Vietnam and other Asian countries to avoid existing tariffs on Chinese steel. That could become even more of a problem if the administration goes ahead with plans to impose new 25 percent tariffs on Chinese steel.

Federal rules of origin allow importers to say goods hail from a given country as long as they were “substantially transformed” there. Slapping a “made in” label onto a steel slab doesn’t satisfy this criterion, while rolling that steel into finished pipes in that country definitely does. In practice, determining what qualifies as enough transformation requires exercising discretion that is hard to make objective or translate into clear and fair rules.

Asian officials insist that the Chinese steel now irking the Trump administration is being processed before being designated as a different product and purchased by U.S. manufacturers as “made in Vietnam” or another country.

A precedent

The Trump White House isn’t the first to suspect China of transshipping to dodge trade barriers. In the early 1990s, the U.S. subjected textiles and apparel imported from China and other emerging economies to annual quotas under the Multi-Fiber Agreement.

At the same time, according to a Chinese-U.S. research team, these Chinese products were often transshipped to the U.S. via Hong Kong. While the U.S. Customs Service tried to detect and crack down on this practice, that proved a daunting task.

Deceptive transshipments violate international law, but are costly and hard to stamp out. I believe efforts to do so will also discourage imports that are valuable to U.S. consumers.
