India to Get an Underwater Rail Network to Dubai Soon

India is all planning to get an underwater rail link to Dubai. According to a report, UAE is looking forward to developing an underwater rail network between Fujairah UAE and Mumbai, India. There is clear hope that both nations might travel vis undersea rail link.

According to the reports, the founder of National Advisor Bureau Limited Alshehhi quoted, “This is a concept. We plan to connect Indian city of Mumbai with Fujairah through ultra-speed floating trains. The project aims to boost bilateral trade. There will be the export of oil to India from Fujairah port and import of excess water from Narmada River, north of Mumbai. In addition, other GCC partners can also improve export and import.

Alshehhi further said that many facts are to be taken into consideration for this concept to take shape and become reality. There will be a feasibility study of the project first to find out whether it is possible for such a rail network to work.

Meanwhile, the planning for the network is on an initial stage right now and if it happens it will be used for travel and export and import both. The total rail network between the two cities will less than 2000 km. India will be reciprocating it by providing fresh water to Dubai in return.

There are reports that also states that apart from the rail network for passenger transit, there are plans facilitating the exchange of goods from India to UAE and export of oil through the pipeline as well.

Interestingly, India is on a developing pace. In our expected daily routines we always want to see the world going through a gigantic transformation. And this time this going to be lucky as the underwater rail which will connect India to Dubai is coming to our ways.

E Ink debuts a new electronic drawing technology

E Ink — a name synonymous with e-reader screens — just debuted a new writing display technology called JustWrite. The tech offers the company’s familiar monochrome aesthetic — albeit in negative this time, with white on black.

The key here, as with most of E Ink’s technology, is minimal power consumption and low cost, the latter of which it was able to accomplish by dumping the TFT (thin-film-transistor LCD). Instead, it’s a thin roll that could be used to paper surfaces like conference rooms and schools, in order to let people write on the walls using a stylus with practically no latency, as evidenced in the below GIF.

“The JustWrite film features one of E Ink’s proprietary electronic inks and offers similar benefits as E Ink’s other product lines: a paper-like experience with a good contrast and reflective display without a backlight,” the company writes. “The JustWrite film is an all plastic display, making it extremely durable and lightweight, with the ability to be affixed and removed easily, enabling writing surfaces in a variety of locations.”

The technology could go head to head with the likes of Sony and reMarkable on drawing tablets, but E Ink appears to be more interested in embedding it in non-traditional surfaces. No word yet on how or when it will come to market, though the company is showing it off in person for the first time this week at an event in Tokyo.

Hulu with Live TV adds Discovery Networks programming to its core and add-on packages

In September, Hulu and Discovery announced a partnership for live and on-demand programming that would see Discovery’s content coming to Hulu’s streaming service. Today, as promised, those channels are going live with the launch of Discovery Networks programming across all of Hulu with Live TV packages.

That means Hulu with Live TV subscribers will now have access to five new channels in the core package, including Discovery, TLC, Motortrend, Animal Planet, and ID. This is the first time the content from these networks has been available live on Hulu’s service.

Hulu’s on-demand service subscription plan, however, offers a number of library episodes from the networks, including shows from Food Network, TLC, and HGTV.

In addition to the expansion of the core package, Hulu’s new add-on bundles focused on Entertainment and Spanish programming are being expanded with Discovery Networks content, as well.

Earlier this month, Hulu announced the launch of these two new add-ons, which are small bundles of channels subscribers can opt to add on top of their core package. The $4.99 per month “Espaรฑol” add-on, for example, offers live news and sports networks, including ESPN Deportes, NBC Universo, CNN En Espaรฑol and History Channel En Espaรฑol.

Now, it will include Discovery en Espaรฑol and Discovery Familia, as a result of the Hulu-Discovery partnership.

Meanwhile, the $7.99 per month Entertainment add-on has been offering live network feeds of LMN (Lifetime Movie Network), FYI, DIY Network, Cooking Channel and CNBC World.

It now gains Destination America, Discovery Family, Science, Discovery Life, and AHC thanks to the deal.

Combined, the new channels bring a variety of popular lifestyle content to Hulu’s Live TV service, including shows like Fixer Upper, Chopped, 90 Day Fiancรฉ, Naked and Afraid, Cupcake Wars, Deadliest Catch, Property Brothers, Alaskan Bush People, and House Hunters, for example.

These sorts of home improvement shows and other light reality fare is something that on-demand services, like Netflix, haven’t quite caught up to. Netflix more recently has been rolling out originals like Nailed It! and Sugar Rush in the competition cooking space to help engage the reality TV audience, but hasn’t really had a breakout hit in the home improvement space.

Not doing more in reality TV could be to Netflix’s disadvantage. Hulu’s data has shown this content is often heavily binged, with one-third of Alaskan Bush People’s audience binge watching the entire series, for instance.

And on Sundays, viewers are streaming multiple episodes of the other titles, it says, including 90 Day Fiancรฉ, Property Brothers, House Hunters, Fixer Upper, Deadliest Catch, Naked and Afraid, Chopped and Cupcake Wars. The latter, Cupcake Wars, also saw its audience streaming 50% more hours this year than the last, the company noted.

These Are The Super Champions Of The Widely Popular Game PUBG

Till now, everyone should have heard about the most trending game PUBG. It is an online multiplayer game which has crossed 100 million downloads. It has now aim towards to push e-sports in India, looking at its popularity. On Sunday, the gaming studio announced its first PUBG Mobile Campus Championship in India. A team of four members The Terrifying Nightmares from Mumbai played and won the game, taking Rs. 15 lakh prize money to home.

The members of the winner team shared some of the tactics required to play the game. In the team, Amit and Sakriya play an aggressive game as front heads and the other two Anand and Mehul plays a supporting role. Sakriya is the one in the group who is grenadier [one who throw bomb].

The four are ace player of PUBG Mobile and now aims to reach the Conqueror tier in the fourth season of PUBG MOBILE.

Hindustan Times spoke to these fantastic four players of PUBG to understanding the game. Here what they say…

The strategy of Amit, Sakriya, Anand and Mehul for the game. On this, they said, “Our main strategy was to land in Pochinki and dominate the area. If at all any team landed there, we would make sure we eliminated all of them and would hope that the zone would end up on us. If it did not, then we would make sure we moved to the center of the circle. If there was any difficulty, we would improvise but we would mostly try to stick to the plan. The only strategy that remained constant was to stay close and use everyone’s strengths to win the round.”

The toughest moment for them was losing Match 03 of the grand finale with 0 kills and coming 12th out of the 20 teams.

Do you think PUBG MOBILE is more of a tactical game than a hardcore First-Person Shooter (FPS)?

Yes, according to me, PUBG MOBILE is a strategic game. It’s not like other FPS games where you just have encounters with enemies. Players need to run towards the zone depending on how it changes. They need to plan how to conquer a particular area or a particular apartment. We have to be trained on how to cook and throw grenades.

Do you think PUBG Mobile can be made more user-friendly when it comes to weapon shortcuts?

At first, it was difficult to play on a mobile but once you get the hang of it, it becomes easy. We have now mastered skills on mobile devices and can switch weapons easily. Moreover, gaming on high-end devices has evolved enough to support heavy games.

How big of a role does graphics play in PUBG MOBILE?

Graphics play a very big role in PUBG MOBILE. Higher graphics have greater detailing of buildings, players, open spaces etc. The game runs smoothly on high graphics, making it easy to aim and shoot enemies. The four players say if they gave a lower-spec, smartphone then they would go for low graphics and high frame rate.

They had used  OPPO F9 Pro in the finals and they had a seamless experience. When asked about the one thing they like the most in the game. Players said, “The whole concept about making strategies to win with your squad is exciting. Getting to connect on this platform is something that PUBG MOBILE is successful in creating. The game is so realistic that you tend to fall in love with it every time you play.”

And there take on gaming professionally in future is that they are looking for more cool updates but professionally they are not making any future in it!

15 Years Of Kal Ho Na Ho: Preity Zinta Had Lost Her First Love Before Shooting Of The Film

Yesterday, a film close to million of heart completed 15 years. We are talking about the iconic Kal Ho Na Ho which is produced by Karan Johar and his father Yash Johar. Priety Zinta, Shahrukh Khan, and Saif Ali Khan made us cry a lot of times and put a reality in front of us about life, love, friendship and family.

“Aaj ek hassi aur baant lo, aaj ek dua aur maang lo, aaj ek ansoon aur pee lo, aaj ek zindagi aur jee lo, aaj ek sapna aur dekh lo, aaj … kya pata, kal ho naa ho…”

This dialouge is enough for us to get reminisced all those heartly moments from this movie! Even after watching it thousands of time, fellas, we watch it one more. Do you agree?

Well, just like us, the cast, crew of KHNH got emotional as the film completed the journey of miles. Recalling the last movie of his father, Karan Johar wrote on Twitter that, “It was my father’s last release, an immortal melody, says Karan Johar as Kal Ho Naa Ho clocks 15 years.”

He even shared a video on his Instagram saying that it will always remain close to his heart. He captioned it as, “A film I absolutely loved writing….My fathers last release….an immortal melody and an incredible cast and crew….I love you so much #KalHoNaaHo it’s been 15 years….”

Let’s take a look at the video…

Remembering those days of KHNH, Preity Zinta retorted that some of the best things happened to her during the movie. She told PTI, “It was very special to me because I lost my first love. I was in love with him, he was not. I felt strongly when the film was offered to me. Some of the best things have happened to me during that film”.

This film showcased the story revolving around a young, introvert woman, who has trust issues after her father’s suicide. Zinta said, “It was one of those films that filled me with joy but it broke our hearts as well. It was a roller coaster ride… It is a timeless film. I am fortunate that I was a part of it”.

This film was meant for Kareena Kapoor but she turned down the role and eventually it falls for Zinta and did great wonders in her career.

Interestingly, Zinta turned down Imtiaz Ali’s Jab We Met, the modern classic love story and she holds no regret for it. Even Preity has said that she and Kareena have a “karmic connection”. “There is a karmic connection between Kareena and me. We both are in very good karma with each other because she said no to Kal Ho Na Ho’ and I said no to Jab We Met’, both of them are iconic and career-defining films. People tell me they liked me a lot in Kal Ho Na Ho’ and I think she did a wonderful job as Geet,” she said.

China’s iQiyi to offer $500M convertible note as content costs balloon

Chinese video streaming service iQiyi is raising new cash as it feels the squeeze from surging content costs.

The video business, which is owned by China’s online search giant Baidu, said on Wednesday that it will issue $500 million in convertible senior notes. Proceeds from the offering will go towards content and technology investments as well as capped call transactions to reduce potential dilution to shareholders upon conversion of the notes.

The proposal arrived just eight months after iQiyi pulled in $2.25 billion from an initial public offering on NASDAQ that marked one of the largest flotations by a Chinese tech company in recent years.

IQiyi has seen its subscription base grow thanks to a series of blockbuster titles – including “Story of Yanxi Palace,” a record-breaking TV drama about backstabbing concubines – but that comes at a cost. During the third quarter, iQiyi’s content expenses rose 66 percent to $876 million, which made up 80 percent of the firm’s total costs. Operating losses widened to $377 million, compared to $160 million a year ago.

Like many other verticals, China’s video streaming arena is a proxy war for Baidu, Alibaba, and Tencent – collectively known as the BAT for their dominance in the country’s consumer technology industry. Baidu’s iQiyi has been going head-to-head with Tencent’s video streaming service. Both claimed to have topped 80 million subscribers in the third quarter: over 98 percent of iQiyi’s 80.7 million subscribers were paying, while Tencent did not specify the breakdown of its 82 million subscriptions.

Alibaba hasn’t revealed numbers for its YoukuTudou in recent months but said that daily average subscribers increased over 100 percent year-over-year during Q3.

Watch Audi, Italdesign and Airbus design and test an autonomous flying taxi

Germany automaker Audi, Airbus and Italdesign presented Tuesday a scaled-down version of its vision of the future: a drone that can pluck the cab off of an autonomous electric vehicle and then fly off to its intended destination.

The companies showed off the flying taxi concept Tuesday during Drone Week in Amsterdam.

You can watch the whole video below that shows the different steps in the process.

To be clear, what the companies showed was a working prototype and one that isn’t big enough for human being to ride in. The prototype of “Pop.Up Next” was a 1:4 scale model.

Still, the companies provided a bullish vision of the future that they say could be just a decade away.

“Flying taxis are on the way. We at Audi are convinced of that,” Dr. Bernd Martens, Audi board member for sourcing and IT, and president of the Audi subsidiary Italdesign said in a statement. “More and more people are moving to cities. And more and more people will be mobile thanks to automation. In future, senior citizens, children and people without a driver’s license will want to use convenient robot taxis. If we succeed in making a smart allocation of traffic between roads and airspace, people and cities can benefit in equal measure.”

Audi said in a description under the YouTube video, that the flying taxi service could be deployed as “soon as the coming decade.”

To prepare, Audi is conducting tests in South America in cooperation with the Airbus subsidiary Voom to learn what an on-demand flight service might look like. Customers can book helicopter flights in Mexico City or Sao Paulo, while an Audi is at the ready for the journey to or from the landing site.

“Services like this help us to understand our customers’ needs better. Because in the future, flying taxis will appeal to a wide range of city dwellers. With Pop.Up Next we are simultaneously exploring the boundaries of what is technically possible. The next step is for a full-size prototype to fly and drive,” Martens said.

Audi is also supporting the Urban Air Mobility flying taxi project in Ingolstadt, an initiative aimed at preparing test operations for a flying taxi at Audi’s site.

Quip raises another $40 million for dental care products and services

Quip, the dental care startup that got its start selling electric toothbrushes directly to consumers, has raised $40 million. The money comes in the form of equity and debt financing, with about half of the funding coming in an equity deal lead by Sherpa Capital and the other half in debt financing from Triplepoint Capital.

“I think the mix of debt and equity is a great thing for us,” Quip CEO Simon Enever told TechCrunch. “It’s more attractive than ever to get alternative types of financing.”

Alternative types of financing, for example, enable founders to potentially avoid terms that are not founder-friendly, as well as raise additional funds that they were unable to secure from traditional investors.

This comes a couple of months after Quip partnered with Target to sell its products, and about six months after Quip raised $10 million from Silicon Valley Bank and acquired Afora, a New York-based startup that offers an alternative to traditional dental insurance.

“It’s been another big year of growth in general for us,” Enever said. “We recently passed a big milestone — our one-millionth brusher.”

With the new funding in hand, Quip has a lot of product and services launches ahead of it, Enever said. He wouldn’t get into details, but Enever said now that the company has executed on phase one — electric toothbrushes and toothpaste — it’s time to expand into additional offerings.

“We’re excited to start offering members more products and services, and in the new year, you’ll see a few new physical products that expand daily at-home care,” he said.

Again, details are limited, but one could envision products like floss, teeth whiteners, mouthwash and chewing gum. Given Quip’s relationships with dental providers, Enever says customers have also asked for cheaper dental visits.

“For patients, we want to help them with everything — that full-service oral hygiene routine,” Enever said. “On the flip side, for providers, the attraction to Quip is we’ve built this large digital platform full of eager patients. We started Quip because people were not invested in their oral health, or were only visiting the dentist when a tooth was falling out or in pain.”

This week, Quip is launching a practice program for dental service providers to offer a low-cost way to offer Quip’s products to their patients. Quip also plans to use the funding to expand its headcount and grow its subscriber base.

Renaming Hauz Khas to Haze Khas, Lutyen’s Delhi to Pollutyen’s Delhi, Red Fort to Grey Fort, Dhaula Kuan to Dhua Kuan and Chandni Chowk to Chandni Choke.

Facebook denies report that election war room was disbanded

Facebook’s election war room monitors and dashboards remain, since so does the threat of election interference. Facebook has confirmed to TechCrunch that its election war room that it paraded reporters through in October has not been disbanded and will be used again for future elections. That directly contradicts a report from Bloomberg today about the war room that claimed “it’s been disbanded”, citing confirmation from a Facebook spokesperson. That article has not received a formal correction or update despite the Facebook’s VP of product for election security Guy Rosen tweeting to Bloomberg’s Sarah Friar that “The war room was effective and we’re not disbanding it, we’re going to do more things like this.”

“Our war room effort is focused specifically on elections-related issues and is designed to rapidly respond to threats such as voter suppression efforts and civic-related misinformation. It was an effective effort during the recent U.S. and Brazil elections, and we are planning to expand the effort going forward for elections around the globe” a Facebook spokesperson tells TechCrunch. It seems there was a miscommunication between Facebook PR and Bloomberg.

Facebook created the war room at its Menlo Park HQ to monitor for election-related violations of its policies ahead of the Brazilian Presidential race and the US midterms. The room features screens visualizing the volume of foreign political content and voter suppressions efforts to a team of high-ranking teammates from Facebook as well as Instagram and WhatsApp. The goal was to speed up response times to sudden spikes in misinformation about candidates or how to vote to prevent the company from being caught flat-footed as it was in the 2016 presidential election when Russian agents pumped propaganda into the social network.

Facebook tells me that the way the war room works is that a few weeks before key elections, it’s staffed up. Interdisciplinary teams work through election day to identify and respond to threats. After an election concludes, staffers return to their teams where they continue 24/7 monitoring for policy-violating activity across the board. That’s because there’s typically much fewer voter suppression attempts and other surges of propaganda when elections are still many months or years away.

But when future key elections arise, the war room will buzz with activity again. The company plans to invest more in the effort since it succeeded in enhancing coordination between Facebook’s security teams. A spokesperson tells me that while the room might move locations to allow more space or be closer to a specific product group, the war room strategy remains.

The Verge sells an anti-Facebook t-shirt

“The war room will be operational ahead of major events, and it still stands. It was effective for our work in both the Brazil and US elections which is why it’s going to be expanded, not disbanded” Rosen tweeted. “Bottom line is the war room we built originally for the US midterms and for Brazil was effective. Going forward we’re expanding not disbanding the effort.”

Bloomberg had reported that “Facebook says [the war room] was never intended to be permanent, and the company is still assessing what is needed for future elections. The strategic response team is a more-permanent solution to crisis problems, a Facebook spokesperson said.” Rosen’s comment that “the headline is incorrect” referred to news aggregator Techmeme’s manually re-written headline “Facebook disbands its widely publicized “War Room”, says it wasn’t a permanent solution, touts Strategic Response Team as its way to handle future crises”, not Bloomberg’s headline “Facebook’s Sheryl Sandberg Is Tainted by Crisis After Crisis”.

The original Bloomberg story had caused such a stire because it came merely five weeks after Facebook had lured scores of reporters to “tour” the war room, shoot video, and report on it. The company was eager to impress on the public that it was taking election security seriously and fighting hard against misinformation. The PR campaign succeeded, with the “war room” name proving especially tantalizing. The words appeared in headlines from many outlets including TechCrunch.

The whole situation has made the Facebook press corps more cynical and skeptical about how the company tries to manipulate their coverage. The idea that Facebook might have just made the war room for show and since shut it down left many with a sour taste, even if that didn’t end up being true. That feeling was only fueled by the New York Times’ report about how Facebook had hired opposition research firm Definers, whose employees tried to seed stories with journalists that defamed the social network’s critics, and wrote their own biased takes for Definers-affiliated publication NTK Network.

It’s clear that Facebook’s relationship with the press remains contentious. Some believe Facebook sucked ad dollars away from news sites before dialing down its referral traffic to those sites, possibly leaving outlets with a grudge. The Verge currently sells an anti-Facebook t-shirt in its merchandise store, showing protestors toppling its logo like a dictator’s statue. But Facebook does plenty to deserve the tough criticism, from failing to protect the 2016 elections, to its ruthless PR strategies, to how it’s allowed polarizing and sensational content to flourish, to how its growth hacking seeks to devour our attention.

As long as the “days since the last Facebook scandal” counter keeps getting reset to zero, it will remain in the hot seat. The systemic change necessary to put society’s well-being above its own growth may take years of rehiring, training, and a fundamental rethinking of its engagement-seeking business model.

Highest Paid Cities In India Where The Pay Packages Of Employees Are Mind-Blowing

Everyone wants high salaries and a well standard of living within big cities. Just to earn the money we deserve, we always keep an eye on the opportunities around us in the across the country and world. But still, only a few people in India have the access to a better annual package as per their convenience.

Well, we are going to tell you about some places or cities where the companies give the employee the right opportunities. Recently, the latest study by LinkedIn tends to help the job seekers in knowing the highest paying cities and sectors.

So there are a few highest paying cities in India and Bengaluru comes on the first number and apart from it Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, and Chennai’s companies provide the salaries.

In Bengaluru, the average amends is Rs 12 lakh per annum while in Mumbai it is 9.03 lakh in Mumbai, 8.99 lakh in Delhi, 8.45 lakh in Hyderabad and 6.31 lakh in Chennai. In other cities, the annual package is less than the above numbers provided.

Let’s talk about the sectors now who pays the highest annual income.

Well, we all know one thing for sure technology-related jobs are the one who pays a good amount. It is the hardware and networking allied jobs which bring the best salaries for the employees. Working in the sector of chip designing also provides a good salary. Due to the chip design executives has moved to India, the salaries have seen a huge rise in the VLSI area, Shivananda Koteshwar, head of design R&D at semiconductor tools company Synopsys India told a leading daily. He also said that just 2 years ago, the employees were getting the salaries 3 times their years of experience and now it is 4.5 time their years of experience.

If we talk about the field of networking, V C Gopalratnam, CIO (international), Cisco said that customers are facing great challenges concerning security and capacity of the networks every day and therefore the demand of networking skills and innovation is increasing. This is the reason behind the rise in the salaries of the employees.

Tech giants offer empty apologies because users can’t quit

A true apology consists of a sincere acknowledgement of wrong-doing, a show of empathic remorse for why you wronged and the harm it caused, and a promise of restitution by improving ones actions to make things right. Without the follow-through, saying sorry isn’t an apology, it’s a hollow ploy for forgiveness.

That’s the kind of “sorry” we’re getting from tech giants — an attempt to quell bad PR and placate the afflicted, often without the systemic change necessary to prevent repeated problems. Sometimes it’s delivered in a blog post. Sometimes it’s in an executive apology tour of media interviews. But rarely is it in the form of change to the underlying structures of a business that caused the issue.

Intractable Revenue

Unfortunately, tech company business models often conflict with the way we wish they would act. We want more privacy but they thrive on targeting and personalization data. We want control of our attention but they subsist on stealing as much of it as possible with distraction while showing us ads. We want safe, ethically built devices that don’t spy on us but they make their margins by manufacturing them wherever’s cheap with questionable standards of labor and oversight. We want groundbreaking technologies to be responsibly applied, but juicy government contracts and the allure of China’s enormous population compromise their morals. And we want to stick to what we need and what’s best for us, but they monetize our craving for the latest status symbol or content through planned obsolescence and locking us into their platforms.

The result is that even if their leaders earnestly wanted to impart meaningful change to provide restitution for their wrongs, their hands are tied by entrenched business models and the short-term focus of the quarterly earnings cycle. They apologize and go right back to problematic behavior. The Washington Post recently chronicled a dozen times Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has apologized, yet the social network keeps experiencing fiasco after fiasco. Tech giants won’t improve enough on their own.

Addiction To Utility

The threat of us abandoning ship should theoretically hold the captains in line. But tech giants have evolved into fundamental utilities that many have a hard time imagining living without. How would you connect with friends? Find what you needed? Get work done? Spend your time? What hardware or software would you cuddle up with in the moments you feel lonely? We live our lives through tech, have become addicted to its utility, and fear the withdrawal.

If there were principled alternatives to switch to, perhaps we could hold the giants accountable. But the scalability, network effects, and aggregation of supply by distributors has led to near monopolies in these core utilities. The second-place solution is often distant. What’s the next best social network that serves as an identity and login platform that isn’t owned by Facebook? The next best premium mobile and PC maker behind Apple? The next best mobile operating system for the developing world beyond Google’s Android? The next best ecommerce hub that’s not Amazon? The next best search engine? Photo feed? Web hosting service? Global chat app? Spreadsheet?

Facebook is still growing in the US & Canada despite the backlash, proving that tech users aren’t voting with their feet. And if not for a calculation methodology change, it would have added 1 million users in Europe this quarter too.

One of the few tech backlashes that led to real flight was #DeleteUber. Workplace discrimination, shady business protocols, exploitative pricing and more combined to spur the movement to ditch the ridehailing app. But what was different here is that US Uber users did have a principled alternative to switch to without much hassle: Lyft. The result was that “Lyft benefitted tremendously from Uber’s troubles in 2018” eMarketer’s forecasting director Shelleen Shum told the USA Today in May. Uber missed eMarketer’s projections while Lyft exceeded them, narrowing the gap between the car services. And meanwhile, Uber’s CEO stepped down as it tried to overhaul its internal policies.

But in the absence of viable alternatives to the giants, leaving these mainstays is inconvenient. After all, they’re the ones that made us practically allergic to friction. Even after massive scandals, data breaches, toxic cultures, and unfair practices, we largely stick with them to avoid the uncertainty of life without them. Even Facebook added 1 million monthly users in the US and Canada last quarter despite seemingly every possible source of unrest. Tech users are not voting with their feet. We’ve proven we can harbor ill will towards the giants while begrudgingly buying and using their products. Our leverage to improve their behavior is vastly weakened by our loyalty.

Inadequate Oversight

Regulators have failed to adequately step up either. This year’s congressional hearings about Facebook and social media often devolved into inane and uninformed questioning like how does Facebook earn money if its doesn’t charge? “Senator, we run ads” Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said with a smirk. Other times, politicians were so intent on scoring partisan points by grandstanding or advancing conspiracy theories about bias that they were unable to make any real progress. A recent survey commissioned by Axios found that “In the past year, there has been a 15-point spike in the number of people who fear the federal government won’t do enough to regulate big tech companies — with 55% now sharing this concern.”

When regulators do step in, their attempts can backfire. GDPR was supposed to help tamp down on the dominance of Google and Facebook by limiting how they could collect user data and making them more transparent. But the high cost of compliance simply hindered smaller players or drove them out of the market while the giants had ample cash to spend on jumping through government hoops. Google actually gained ad tech market share and Facebook saw the littlest loss while smaller ad tech firms lost 20 or 30 percent of their business.

Europe’s GDPR privacy regulations backfired, reinforcing Google and Facebook’s dominance. Chart via Ghostery, Cliqz, and WhoTracksMe.

Even the Honest Ads act, which was designed to bring political campaign transparency to internet platforms following election interference in 2016, has yet to be passed even despite support from Facebook and Twitter. There’s hasn’t been meaningful discussion of blocking social networks from acquiring their competitors in the future, let alone actually breaking Instagram and WhatsApp off of Facebook. Governments like the U.K. that just forcibly seized documents related to Facebook’s machinations surrounding the Cambridge Analytica debacle provide some indication of willpower. But clumsy regulation could deepen the moats of the incumbents, and prevent disruptors from gaining a foothold. We can’t depend on regulators to sufficiently protect us from tech giants right now.

Our Hope On The Inside

The best bet for change will come from the rank and file of these monolithic companies. With the war for talent raging, rock star employees able to have huge impact on products, and compensation costs to keep them around rising, tech giants are vulnerable to the opinions of their own staff. It’s simply too expensive and disjointing to have to recruit new high-skilled workers to replace those that flee.

Google declined to renew a contract with the government after 4000 employees petitioned and a few resigned over Project Maven’s artificial intelligence being used to target lethal drone strikes. Change can even flow across company lines. Many tech giants including Facebook and Airbnb have removed their forced arbitration rules for harassment disputes after Google did the same in response to 20,000 of its employees walking out in protest.

Thousands of Google employees protested the company’s handling of sexual harassment and misconduct allegations on Nov. 1.

Facebook is desperately pushing an internal communications campaign to reassure staffers it’s improving in the wake of damning press reports from the New York Times and others. TechCrunch published an internal memo from Facebook’s outgoing VP of communications Elliot Schrage in which he took the blame for recent issues, encouraged employees to avoid finger-pointing, and COO Sheryl Sandberg tried to reassure employees that “I know this has been a distraction at a time when you’re all working hard to close out the year — and I am sorry.” These internal apologizes could come with much more contrition and real change than those paraded for the public.

And so after years of us relying on these tech workers to build the product we use every day, we must now rely that will save us from them. It’s a weighty responsibility to move their talents where the impact is positive, or commit to standing up against the business imperatives of their employers. We as the public and media must in turn celebrate when they do what’s right for society, even when it reduces value for shareholders. And we must accept that shaping the future for the collective good may be inconvenient for the individual.
