Taking a break from the usual fanfare in the forums and social media that accompany a device launch, Xiaomi has chosen to quietly launch the new Mi Pad 3 tablet. The tablet went live on Xiaomi’s Chinese website, but there was no announcement post in their forums to be found for the device.
The new Mi Pad 3 is similar to the Mi Pad 2 in terms of design. You get a tablet with a metallic unibody which is similar in dimensions to the Mi Pad 2, weighing in at 328g. The front of the device is dominated by the 7.9″ LCD QXGA (2048 x 1536) display.
On the inside, the Mi Pad 3 is powered by the new hexa core MediaTek MT8176 SoC with 2x Cortex-A72 cores clocked at 2.1GHz and 4x Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.7GHz. The GPU is a PowerVR GX6250 clocked at 600MHz. The Mi Pad 3 comes with 4GBs of RAM, 64GBs of internal storage (but sadly, no microSD card support), and a beefy 6,600 mAh battery despite its slim profile. The rear camera has been upgraded to a 13MP shooter with f/2.2, while the 5MP f/2.0 front camera remains the same. The device runs on MIUI 8, likely on Android 6.0 Marshmallow.
The Xiaomi Mi Pad 3 is listed for a price of CNY 1499 (~$218). There is no word on the pricing and availability of the device outside of China.
The Xiaomi Mi Pad 2 stood out with its Intel Atom X5-Z8500 SoC that allowed the device to come in a Windows version. The Xiaomi Mi Pad before it came with a Tegra K1, so it seems Xiaomi is still experimenting with which SoC suits this tablet line the best. We are interested in knowing how the MediaTek SoC fares when compared to some of the newer and more capable Qualcomm Snapdragon SoCs with similar cluster setups, and if it is enough to comfortably power a tablet experience on MIUI.
