U.S. declines in internet freedom rankings, thanks to net neutrality repeal and fake news

If you need a safe haven on the internet, where the pipes are open and the freedoms are plentiful — you might want to move to Estonia or Iceland.

The latest “internet freedoms” rankings are out, courtesy of Freedom House’s annual report into the state of internet freedoms and personal liberties, based on rankings of 65 countries that represent the vast majority of the world’s internet users. Although the U.S. remains firmly in the top ten, it dropped a point on the year earlier after a recent rash of changes to internet regulation and a lack of in the realm of surveillance.

Last year, the U.S. was 21 in the global internet freedom ranking — the lower number, the better a country ranks. That was behind Estonia, Iceland, Canada, Germany and Australia. This year the U.S. is at 22 — thanks to the repeal of net neutrality and the renewal of U.S. spy powers.

The report also cited “disinformation and hyperpartisan content” — or fake news — as a “pressing concern.”

It was only in June, after a protracted battle, that the Federal Communications Commission finally pulled the plug on the Obama-era rules that guaranteed the free and fair flow of internet data. Net neutrality — which promises to treat every user’s traffic as equal and doesn’t prioritize certain internet users or services over others — was dead. That was despite months of delays and a scandal that embroiled the FCC’s chairman Ajit Pai for allegedly lying to lawmakers over a falsified denial-of-service attack that he used to try to stifle criticism of his repeal plans. What did happen was an onslaught of citizens demanding that the net neutrality rules. But that was eclipsed by an astroturfing campaign that even used dead people to try to swing the decision.

What also dropped the U.S. a point was the near-clean reauthorization of the government’s surveillance laws, which passed with little debate despite a call for change. It was the first time to reel in the government’s spying powers since the Edward Snowden revelations a half-decade ago — but lawmakers buckled to pressure from the intelligence community, despite recognizing a long history of abuse and overreach by U.S. spy agencies.

Freedom House called the law’s renewal “a blow to civil rights and privacy advocates,” who advocated for change since long before Edward Snowden had a face.

A single digit drop in ranking may not seem like much, compared to the last-place contenders — Iran and China, predictably ranking in worst, but many see the U.S. as a beacon of free speech and expression — a model that others aspire to replicate.

As the report found, that goes both ways. The U.S. has its part to blame for the decline in at least 17 countries where “fake news” has been co-opted by oppressive regimes to justify crackdowns on dissent and free speech. The rise of “fake news,” a term largely attributed to Donald Trump — then a candidate for president — which spread like wildfire — and across borders — as a way to reject reported information or factual current events that were derogatory to a person’s views. In other words, it was a verbal hand grenade, lobbed whenever a person heard something they didn’t like.

Now, other regimes are cracking down on internet freedoms under the guise of fighting fake news. Philippines and Kazakhstan were both named by Freedom House as using “fake news” to restrict the internet by removing content and stifling the spread of views in the name of fighting misinformation.

While many might not care much for a country you know little about, it’s a reminder that the U.S. is still seen in high regard and other nations will follow in its footsteps.

Michael Abramowitz, president of Freedom House, said that the U.S. government in particular should take “a more proactive role” in stepping up their efforts to maintain a free and open internet to prevent playing into the hands of of “less democratic governments looking to increase their control of the internet.”

Enjoy Diwali By Brightening The Environment With Non-Polluting Crackers

Now green eco-friendly crackers may soon be a reality. On the auspicious occasion of Diwali bursting crackers leads to an increase in pollution level. Looking on to this, the SC has imposed a stop on bursting crackers and introduced and allowed the use of only green and eco-friendly crackers within a 2-hour time frame. These eco-friendly crackers release water vapor as a dust suppressant.

This year Diwali, the festival of lights promises us for a pollution free environment. As air pollution has become a major issue for the people living in Delhi. This pollution causes breathing problems and deteriorating air visibility. We can say that crackers are equal to problems not for celebrations.

Whereas the local vendors who are selling crackers and do not know about the use of green crackers find ways to sell out their crackers. We know that Diwali is known for crackers. But the fact is that many people have been shifted towards the use of eco-friendly ones.

According to IANS, A. Muthu, a crackers dealer in Sivakasi, Tamil Nadu said, “Unlike the normal crackers making method, the eco-friendly crackers are based on vaccum combustion method. These crackers produce colourful sparks with a considerable sound and less smoke.”

He added, “All the major metros demand eco-friendly crackers, while people in villages and small towns still prefer high-decibel crackers.”

For a pollution free environment, the government has already have introduced many schemes. Like the odd-even scheme and CNG driven cars and buses and even promoting the use of bicycles and carpooling. The recent move has put a stop on the plying of 15-yr-old petrol and 10-year-old diesel vehicles in Delhi. An order has also been given to the Transport Department to impound these vehicles if found plying.

Some of the people think that without bursting the crackers the festival is incomplete. So opting for eco-friendly crackers are the best option to complete and lighten up your Diwali.

Nomad releases a stunning wireless charging pad with Apple Watch dock

With Apple’s AirPower still missing in action, the Apple accessory ecosystem has been attempting to fill the need with similar products. Some of these third party products are better than others, and the new Base Station from Nomad looks to be the best of them all.

The Base Station does two things. One, it wireless charges up to three mobile devices. Two, it charges an Apple Watch through an integrated Apple MFi-certified Magnetic Apple Watch charger. More so, it looks great.

A padded leather surface covers three charging coils allowing the unit to recharge up to three devices — or one device laying horizontally across the pad. Each of the coils are Qi-certified and output at 7.5W. As for the Apple Watch, it can only be recharged using the included magnetic charger unless Apple activates Qi-compatibility through a software update.

The Nomad Base Station is available now for $120. Don’t have an Apple Watch? The same charging base is available for $20 less and still supports up to three devices.

Brex has partnered with WeWork, AWS and more for its new rewards program

Brex, the corporate card built for startups, unveiled its new rewards program today.

The billion-dollar company, which announced its $125 million Series C three weeks ago, has partnered with Amazon Web Services, WeWork, Instacart, Google Ads, SendGrid, Salesforce Essentials, Twilio, Zendesk, Caviar, HubSpot, Orrick, Snap, Clerky and DoorDash to give entrepreneurs the ability to accrue and spend points on services and products they use regularly.

Brex is lead by a pair of 22-year-old serial entrepreneurs who are well aware of the costs associated with building a startup. They’ve been carefully crafting Brex’s list of partners over the last year and say their cardholders will earn roughly 20 percent more rewards on Brex than from any competitor program.

“We didn’t want it to be something that everyone else was doing so we thought, what’s different about startups compared to traditional small businesses?” Brex co-founder and chief executive officer Henrique Dubugras told TechCrunch. “The biggest difference is where they spend money. Most credit card reward systems are designed for personal spend but startups spend a lot more on business.”

Companies that use Brex exclusively will receive 7x points on rideshare, 3x on restaurants, 3x on travel, 2x on recurring software and 1x on all other expenses with no cap on points earned. Brex carriers still using other corporate cards will receive just 1x points on all expenses.

Most corporate cards offer similar benefits for travel and restaurant expenses, but Brex is in a league of its own with the rideshare benefits its offering and especially with the recurring software (SalesForce, HubSpot, etc.) benefits.

San Francisco-based Brex has raised about $200 million to date from investors including Greenoaks Capital, DST Global and IVP.  At the time of its fundraise, the company told TechCrunch it planned to use its latest capital infusion to build out its rewards program, hire engineers and figure out how to grow the business’s client base beyond only tech startups.

“This is going to allow us to compete even more with Amex, Chase and the big banks,” Dubugras said.

Conversica, which uses AI to replicate sales agents, raises $31M, now valued around $300M

Chatbots have largely been a disappointing development up to now in the world of artificial intelligence applications, with too many mistakes made when the AI fails to address a user’s actual intent. But in the world of enterprise apps, there remain some interesting, adjacent opportunities: for example, where AI may not be used to underpin a whole conversation, but could at least help get it started.

This week, one of the bigger companies working in this area, Conversica, is announcing a growth round of $31 million — to help it continue its own conversation with customers, so to speak. It will be using the funding to expand to new markets and add more features to its platform.

The Series C round is being led by existing investor Providence Strategic Growth Capital Partners L.L.C. (an affiliate of Providence Equity Partners), which also led a $34 million round in the company two years ago. Existing investors Toba Capital and Kennet Partners and new investors CIBC and Savano Capital also participated.

The company is not disclosing its valuation but off the record I was told by a source that it’s now around $300 million, after the company passed an annual run rate of $35 million earlier this year, doubling its ARR over the last two years. The Silicon Valley startup has raised $87 million raised in total over the last five years after bootstrapping for the first three of its existence, and fending off a number of acquisition approaches from some high-profile suitors.

Conversica’s CEO Alex Terry tells me that the basic idea of what Conversica does is to be the first point of engagement between a potential lead and the company in text-based interactions over email or SMS messaging, before handing off the relationship to a human.

“Our AI sales assistant engages in human conversations with marketing and sales leads to engage and qualify then, and then hand them over the most qualified leads to humans to close the deal,” he said.

What that means, in effect, is that its AI is trained to get basic contact details about a person and his/her company, and some more about the kind of interest that lead might have in contacting a company such as when a he/she is looking to make a purchase and when would be a good time to speak further. All of that is then updated in a company’s CRM system — saving the Conversica customer the time and money it would have had to spend to get that information manually.

But he is clear about one thing: “We’ve never looked at ourselves as a chatbot,” Terry said, distancing his company from much of the disenchantment we’ve seen with AI-based messaging ‘bots’ that provide automatic responses to users’ questions, which have largely failed to deliver on their promise. “Part of the trick is that we have tried to fix specific problems for specific customers. A chatbot that looks for keywords and parrots back is a frustrating experience. We’ve focused on a full problem and solving that.”

Conversica is not the only one that is building AI for this particular use case, though. There is Drift, which earlier this year raised $60 million; X.ai, another venture-backed AI startup that started by building virtual assistants to help people schedule meetings with each other but has been commandeered also to engage sales leads; Exceed.AI, which has gone so far as to buy Google ads against searches for Conversica, as one measure of how closely the two products resemble each other; and many others.

Terry believes that Conversica has a clear edge over these, not just because of the revenues it is making and their growth, but because of the size of its customer base — it works with some 1,000 large enterprises including AT&T, Box, Chrysler, Snowflake Computing, CenturyLink, the Sacramento Kings, Oracle, and SAP — and that has afforded it a huge trove of data to “teach” its system to work better.

“We’ve been doing this for eight years, and have reached over 70 million people, working out to 25 percent of all adults in the US,” said Terry. “We’ve trained our AI on over 400 million messages and there is a strong component where the AI gets smarter over time.”

As for what might come next, while today’s focus is on “entry-level” sales engagement and essentially replacing entry-level sales assistants, in the future you might expect that to extend deeper into the conversation as the system gets more sophisticated.

The company recently secured a U.S. patent for an AI-powered system that automatically carries on conversations, and Terry tells me that it’s already been testing a deeper set of “talking points” for its AI, including answering frequently asked questions, and looking into how to also use third-party data about the potential customer and the sales people to enhance how it interacts and matches up customers with salespeople. (That would put it into closer competition, or perhaps partnership, with Afiniti, a startup we wrote about last week.)

There is also the fact that today, Conversica’s natural language engine is focused around written words, and over time it expects to also add a voice component to the mix.

iHeartRadio is coming to Mexico

iHeartMedia announced today that its streaming radio app iHeartRadio is coming to Mexico. In fact, a beta version of the app is already live, with plans for an official launch on November 3.

As part of this launch, the company is partnering with Mexican broadcaster Grupo ACIR, which owns the Amor, Mix and La Comadre radio brands. iHeartRadio México will include all 56 Grupo ACIR and 850 iHeartMedia broadcast radio stations.

The app will also offer digital-only stations from both companies, as well as English- and Spanish-language podcasts. (iHeartMedia is getting more serious about podcasts, as indicated by its recent acquisition of the parent company behind HowStuffWorks.)

The launch is timed to coincide with iHeartRadio Fiesta Latina in Miami, and the broadcasters are promoting the partnership with a contest for one Grupo ACIR listener to win a VIP trip to the event.

“This partnership will allow us to better connect with our audience by delivering an incredible free music listening experience and providing amazing technology to our users and partners,” said Grupo ACIR CEO Antonio Ibarra in the announcement.

At launch, the app won’t include some of iHeartRadio’s other features, like on-demand music streaming. Chief Product Officer Chris Williams said this follows the roadmap that the company used when launching in markets like Australia, Canada and New Zealand — it starts out with live radio and podcasts, because negotiating for international streaming rights takes time.

“It’s faster for me to develop and release the app, get it out there and get adoption, establish what we are and who we are,” Williams said. “Then we can get the rights and add the functionality.”

Saif Ali Khan In A Light-Hearted Conversation Said He Is Open For All Nappy Ads For Taimur

If you are wondering why national obsession Taimur Ali Khan aka Tim is not making headlines with his new pictures doing all the antics and expression. Here’s why Tim is away from the limelight from the last week.

According to the latest reports, Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan have asked the paparazzi to stop chasing and clicking their chubby little nawab now because the 2 years old toddler is getting used to it and liking the attention every time he went out. The parents are worried about the constant gazing of media at Taimur but Saif seems all cool with the immense popularity of his son and make jokes of it.

Recently, Saif Ali Khan is busy promoting his latest flick in Bollywood and while it was going, Saif was asked about the scenario what if Taimur promotes the film. On this Saif in a light-hearted conversation said every film producer that he is working with wants his son Taimur to promote the movies. Saif also joked that Kareena asked him to not be so cheap and sell his son. But Saif further added that he is open to all nappy ads for Taimur.

Here is Daddy Saif’s statement, “Every producer I am working with is half-jokingly say, “Haha can we put him (for promotions)”.

With white in his hair (referring to his look from Baazaar). With Kaalakaandi, they wanted to put rubber bands. In hunter they want to put that Naga Sadhu wig on this poor guy. My wife (Kareena Kapoor Khan) says, “Don’t be so cheap. You can’t sell your son (Taimur). I am like, “Why not? Let’s sell him.”

“Seriously yaar, he is any way there on the internet. I am just using this platform to say if anybody has any good nappy ads or anything… at a very reasonable price…it’s not reasonable, it’s quite expensive actually. And, I won’t give him the money also. I’ll give him some cash for his education, I am already giving it to him. And I’ll spend the rest.”

Meanwhile, Saif’s co-star Chitrangda Singh from Baazaar was in splits when she heard all this while sitting next to him in the interview and interrupted him asking, “On what…” Saif said, “On holidays in Switzerland.”

Well, before the haters lose their minds on the social media about this and start criticizing him let us tell you Saif said this in a light-hearted way and he was joking.

Saif and Chitrangda’s starrer movie Baazaar is doing average at the box office with Rs 3.07 crore on its opening day. Also, garnered mix reviews from the critics as well as the audience.

Original Content podcast: There’s spooky fun in Netflix’s ‘Haunting of Hill House’

The new Netflix series “The Haunting of Hill House” is based on the classic Shirley Jackson novel of the same name, but fans will probably have a better time if they put the book out of their mind.

Yes, the show opens with the same famous passage that begins the novel, and show and book characters have some similarities. But what writer-director Mike Flanagan has really done is use Jackson’s sinister house as the setting for a new story, focused the Crain family — driven from the house by mysterious events back in 1992, and drawn back there due to present-day tragedy.

On this episode of the Original Content podcast, we’re joined (just in time for Halloween) by Devin Coldewey just in time to offer our initial impressions of the show. While we had some reservations (get ready for the most extensive discussion of fill lights that you’ll ever hear on this podcast), it’s clear that “The Haunting of Hill House” managed to scare the heck out of all of us, and we were also impressed by the fact that each of the five Crain children becomes a distinct, memorable character in their own right.

If that’s not enough to convince you, it’s also worth watching the show for all the hidden ghosts, and for the formal ambition of episode six, with its long, single-take scenes that span the past and the present.

In addition to our review, we discuss the release of “Red Dead Redemption 2” and the announcement that WarnerMedia will be shutting down its FilmStruck service for classic films.

You can listen in the player below, subscribe using Apple Podcasts or find us in your podcast player of choice. If you like the show, please let us know by leaving a review on Apple. You also can send us feedback directly. (Or suggest shows and movies for us to review!)

Facial recognition startup Kairos founder continues to fight attempted takeover

There’s some turmoil brewing over at Miami-based facial recognition startup Kairos. Late last month, New World Angels President and Kairos board chairperson Steve O’Hara sent a letter to Kairos founder Brian Brackeen notifying him of his termination from the role of chief executive officer. The termination letter cited willful misconduct as the cause for Brackeen’s termination. Specifically, O’Hara said Brackeen misled shareholders and potential investors, misappropriated corporate funds, did not report to the board of directors and created a divisive atmosphere.

Kairos is trying to tackle the society-wide problem of discrimination in artificial intelligence. While that’s not the company’s explicit mission — it’s to provide authentication tools to businesses — algorithmic bias has long been a topic the company, especially Brackeen, has addressed.

Brackeen’s purported termination was followed by a lawsuit, on behalf of Kairos, against Brackeen, alleging theft, a breach of fiduciary duties — among other things. Brackeen, in an open letter sent a couple of days ago to shareholders — and one he shared with TechCrunch — about the “poorly constructed coup,” denies the allegations and details his side of the story. He hopes that the lawsuit will be dismissed and that he will officially be reinstated as CEO, he told TechCrunch. As it stands today, Melissa Doval who became CFO of Kairos in July, is acting as interim CEO.

“The Kairos team is amazing and resilient and has blown me away with their commitment to the brand,” Doval told TechCrunch. “I’m humbled by how everybody has just kind of stuck around in light of everything that has transpired.”

The lawsuit, filed on October 10 in Miami-Dade and spearheaded by Kairos COO Mary Wolff, alleges Brackeen “used his position as CEO and founder to further his own agenda of gaining personal notoriety, press, and a reputation in the global technology community” to the detriment of Kairos. The lawsuit describes how Brackeen spent less than 30 percent of his time in the company’s headquarters, “even though the Company was struggling financially.”

Other allegations detail how Brackeen used the company credit card to pay for personal expenses and had the company pay for a car he bought for his then-girlfriend. Kairos alleges Brackeen owes the company at least $60,000.

In his open letter, Brackeen says, “Steve, Melissa and Mary, as cause for my termination and their lawsuit against me, have accused me of stealing 60k from Kairos, comprised of non-work related travel, non-work related expenses, a laptop, and a beach club membership,” Brackeen wrote in a letter to shareholders. “Let’s talk about this. While I immediately found these accusations absurd, I had to consider that, to people on the outside of  ‘startup founder’ life— their claims could appear to be salacious, if not illegal.”

Brackeen goes on to say that none of the listed expenses — ranging from trips, meals, rides to iTunes purchases — were not “directly correlated to the business of selling Kairos to customers and investors, and growing Kairos to exit,” he wrote in the open letter. Though, he does note that there may be between $3,500 to $4,500 worth of charges that falls into a “grey area.”

“Conversely, I’ve personally invested, donated, or simply didn’t pay myself in order to make payroll for the rest of the team, to the tune of over $325,000 dollars,” he wrote. “That’s real money from my accounts.”

Regarding forcing Kairos to pay for his then-girlfriend’s car payments, Brackeen explains:

On my making Kairos ‘liable to make my girlfriend’s car payment’— in order to offset the cost of Uber rides to and from work, to meetings, the airport, etc, I determined it would be more cost effective to lease a car. Unfortunately, after having completely extended my personal credit to start and keep Kairos operating, it was necessary that the bank note on the car be obtained through her credit. The board approved the $700 per month per diem arrangement, which ended when I stopped driving the vehicle. Like their entire case— its not very sensational, when truthfully explained.

The company also claims Brackeen has interfered with the company and its affairs since his termination. Throughout his open letter, Brackeen refers to this as an “attempted termination” because, as advised by his lawyers, he has not been legally terminated. He also explains how, in the days leading up to his ouster, Brackeen was seeking to raise additional funding because in August, “we found ourselves in the position of running low on capital.” While he was presenting to potential investors in Singapore, Brackeen said that’s “when access to my email and documents was cut.”

He added, “I traveled to the other side of the world to work with my team on IP development and meet with the people who would commit to millions in investment— and was fired via voicemail the day after I returned.”

Despite the “termination” and lawsuit, O’Hara told TechCrunch via email that “in the interest of peaceful coexistence, we are open to reaching an agreement to allow Brian to remain part of the family as Founder, but not as CEO and with very limited responsibilities and no line authority.”

O’Hara also noted the company’s financials showed there was $44,000 in cash remaining at the end of September. He added, “Then reconcile it with the fact that Brian raised $6MM in 2018 and ask yourself, how does a company go through that kind of money in under 9 months.”

Within the next twelve days, there will be a shareholder vote to remove the board, as well as a vote to reinstate Brackeen as CEO, he told me. After that, Brackeen said he intends to countersue Doval, O’Hara and Wolff.

In addition to New World Angels, Kairos counts Kapor Capital, Backstage Capital and others as investors. At least one investor, Arlan Hamilton of Backstage Capital, has publicly come out in support of Brackeen.

As previously mentioned, Brackeen has been pretty outspoken about the ethical concerns of facial recognition technologies. In the case of law enforcement, no matter how accurate and unbiased these algorithms are, facial recognition software has no business in law enforcement, Brackeen said at TechCrunch Disrupt in early September. That’s because of the potential for unlawful, excessive surveillance of citizens.

Given the government already has our passport photos and identification photos, “they could put a camera on Main Street and know every single person driving by,” Brackeen said.

And that’s a real possibility. In the last couple of months, Brackeen said Kairos turned down a government request from Homeland Security, seeking facial recognition software for people behind moving cars.

“For us, that’s completely unacceptable,” Brackeen said.

Whether that’s entirely unacceptable for Doval, the interim CEO of Kairos, is not clear. In an interview with TechCrunch, Doval said, “we’re committed to being a responsible and ethical vendor” and that “we’re going to continue to champion the elimination of algorithmic bias in artificial intelligence.” While that’s not a horrific thing to say, it’s much vaguer than saying, “No, we will not ever sell to law enforcement.”

Selling to law enforcement could be lucrative, but that comes with ethical risks and concerns. But if the company is struggling financially, maybe the pros could outweigh the cons.
